Main Street Theater

Houston, TX, United States

Main Street Theater, founded in 1975 by Rebecca Greene Udden, is a prominent Houston-based theater company dedicated to producing innovative and thought-provoking plays for both adults and children. Initially housed at the Episcopal Diocese’s community center, the company moved to Rice Village in 1981, developing its intimate playing style. The MainStage, known for its compelling productions, has garnered national attention. In 1996, the company expanded with a second space at Chelsea Market, later relocating its Theater for Youth program to the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH) in 2015. Main Street Theater's mission is to challenge audiences and artists alike, fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion. The organization also offers extensive educational programs, including classes, camps, and school residencies, aiming to enrich the Houston community. The BIPOC Fellowship Program further supports early-career individuals in artistic leadership. Main Street Theater continues to be a vital cultural institution, reflecting and engaging with the diverse stories and communities of Houston.
