The Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston, commonly known as MATCH, is a cultural hub located at 3400 Main Street in Houston, Texas. Established as a collaborative project, MATCH was conceived by four small arts organizations twelve years prior to its realization. These organizations aspired to create a space where they could collaborate and coexist, leading to the development of a unique venue that presents the arts in an intimate and engaging manner. MATCH is situated in the vibrant Midtown district, conveniently positioned on Main Street and accessible via the light rail. The center is designed to serve as a home for Houston's diverse arts scene. It features an array of facilities including four performance spaces, three rehearsal studios, a 3,000 square foot gallery space, and office accommodations for up to 60 arts professionals. This infrastructure supports a broad spectrum of artistic endeavors, from dance and music to theater, visual art, film, and multi-disciplinary works. The center's mission is to foster a creative environment that encourages collaboration among artists and arts organizations. MATCH aims to present the arts in a way that is accessible and affordable to the community, breaking down traditional barriers and pretensions. Its vision is to be a place where art can flourish freely and where audiences can experience performances and exhibitions up close, making for a more immersive and personal encounter with the arts. The MATCH facility is managed by a dedicated staff, overseen by a Board of Directors, and was brought to life with the help of various architects and consultants. The center also offers virtual tours, allowing potential visitors to explore its spaces online. In response to economic changes and the impact of inflation, MATCH has updated its pricing structure. The center has not increased rental rates since 2019, but due to the rise in the Consumer Price Index and associated operating costs, it has implemented new prices for rental fees, ticket fees, and technical labor charges. These changes are designed to ensure the sustainability of the facility while continuing to provide a platform for artists and organizations to showcase their work. Existing events already scheduled will honor the old rental fees, while new events and those scheduled after July 1, 2024, will be subject to the new pricing. The center maintains that its ticket fees remain competitive compared to other venues in Houston. MATCH remains a cornerstone of the Houston arts community, offering a space where art and culture can thrive and where the public can engage with a wide range of artistic expressions. Its commitment to accessibility and collaboration continues to make it a cherished destination for both artists and audiences alike.
