Since their debut performance in New York City in 2011, they have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East, and India, traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered.

Two sterling ensembles unite for a program centered on Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Septet, the first major work written for piano trio and string quartet. The father of chamber music, Joseph Haydn was known for the humor in his music, in addition to the elegance and intellect in his music. American composer William Bolcom wrote a brilliant and personal work for piano trio, inspired by Haydn’s humor and artistry. Bolcom himself shows a fun side together with seriousness in his music-making, as did Schoenberg. We feature some of their cabaret songs followed by Schoenberg’s most compact yet colorful and poetic solo piano piece, arranged for piano trio by the Horszowski Trio’s violinist, Jesse Mills, with his personal dedication and passion for Schoenberg’s music.

The celebrated Horszowski Trio returns with a piano trio by the too-infrequently-performed Clara Schumann and three recently composed short works after the music of her husband, Robert Schumann. Shostakovich’s profoundly moving WWII-era elegy rounds out the evening.

Nadia Boulanger, an educator at Longy, taught so many talented composers from around the world. “Vers la vie nouvelle (Towards new life)” is one of a very few works she composed, and it is a poignant, honest and emotional piece written after her sister’s death. Chen Yi grew up during the cultural revolution in China. In spite of her tough childhood, her music after she moved to America has blossomed and invoked such a beautiful memory of China. Smetana’s loss of his young child was devastating. He used his musical language to express his grief, anger, loneliness, dreams, and memories of a joyful time with her (incorporating into the piece a poignant melody they used to sing together). This piano trio became one of the most complex yet meaningful masterpieces he created.

Howard Swanson had a complicated life as a musician. His career did not take a linear path upwards, but was full of starts and stops, and various chapters. He was able to “begin again” anywhere he went. We introduce this poetic solo piano gem, “Cuckoo,” and we pair it with one of the most iconic chamber works by Schubert. After the premiere of this trio masterpiece, it was criticized for being too long. The composer cut some sections to make it shorter and that’s the version that most people hear today. However, the Horszowski Trio brings us back to where he began, with the original full version.

Kenji Bunch‘s “Danceband” was composed for the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival in Colorado, of which Rieko and Jesse are artistic directors, to celebrate the festival’s 25th Anniversary in August 2022. This piece for piano trio and percussion, is a dance suite. The dance suite tradition was developed by baroque composers including J.S. Bach. The Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn revived Bach’s music during his own time and prevented it from fading into obscurity.

Musical inspiration can begin anywhere and continues across the boundaries of time. The Horszowski Trio commissioned a group of American composers from various generations to write short pieces inspired by the music of Robert Schumann, a project called “Fantasiestücke.” After Paul Chihara completed a piece for us, he decided to surprise us with the gift of a longer version of the work. On this program we present the WORLD PREMIERE of this longer-form trio. We are deeply inspired by the music of Robert Schumann, and we recorded his complete piano trios three years ago. He composed his first piano trio which is inspired by his wife, Clara, who wrote her own trio one year earlier. The seed of inspiration continues into our own time and into the music of Mr. Chihara!
