Utah Valley Symphony

Provo , United States

== Utah Valley Symphony == The Utah Valley Symphony (UVS) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1959 with the goal of providing local musicians with an opportunity to showcase their talents and to offer symphonic music to the community. Originally named the Central Utah Community Orchestra, it was later renamed to the Utah Valley Symphony. The ensemble's inaugural performance featured 30 musicians and was attended by an audience of eleven, primarily family members of the performers. Over the next two years, the orchestra expanded to a full-sized group with 75 to 80 members, depending on the requirements of each concert. The symphony's popularity has grown significantly since its inception, necessitating two performances for each concert due to increased audience demand. === Mission === The mission of the Utah Valley Symphony is to establish itself as the leading orchestra in Utah Valley, showcasing the region's finest musicians and performing a wide range of music to the highest standard. The symphony is dedicated to serving the community through various initiatives, including: * Educating audience members of all ages * Fostering young musicians * Engaging in mutually beneficial partnerships with other arts organizations in Utah Valley The symphony strives to be self-sustaining in its operations and activities. === Performances and Community Engagement === The Utah Valley Symphony hosts several performances each season, including special School Concerts, which introduce students to live symphonic music. These concerts were previously held at the Provo Tabernacle until it was damaged by fire in December 2010. Currently, events are held at the Covey Center for the Arts. The orchestra is composed of musicians of various ages, from college students to retirees, with an average age of around 45. Members come from diverse backgrounds, including music educators, private teachers, performance major graduates, and passionate musicians. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday night at the Provo Seventh Day Adventist Church. Auditions for new members are conducted annually in September and December, with no fees required for auditioning or participating in the orchestra. === Conductors === The Utah Valley Symphony has been under the direction of several conductors throughout its history, including: * James Mason and Jacob Bos * Dr. Harold Goodman * Dr. Lawrence Sardoni * Dr. Glenn Williams * Dr. Ralph G. Laycock * Dr. Clyn D. Barrus Since the spring of 1998, Bryce Rytting has served as the current conductor of the symphony.
