The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program: American Composers Orchestra and League of American Orchestras have established two 30-orchestra consortiums, each supporting commissions by six women and nonbinary EarShot alumni. Each composer writes a 6–8 minute orchestral work and develops an educational or community-focused program presented in partnership with each orchestra. In the 2025–26 season, composers have their works performed by nineteen orchestras across the U.S.

Humanity is at the core of this transformative program. “I conceived of it as a symphony on the greatness of the human soul,” Prokofiev remarked about his wartime Fifth Symphony. In 2020, as Reena Esmail set out to compose RE|Member, she felt the deep healing of a collective return to music-making after a global pandemic. And Billy Childs expresses trauma, resilience, and empowerment within the Black American experience through his poignant symphonic poem, Diaspora, brought to life in these performances by saxophonist Steven Banks.

Renowned vocalist Sissel Kyrkjebø, who mesmerized audiences worldwide as the ethereal voice of the movie Titanic, joins the SLSO for an unforgettable evening of artistry, elegance, and emotion. Considered one of the world's top crossover sopranos, Sissel’s musical style ranges from classical vocals and operatic arias to pop and folk songs. Sissel has partnered with a variety of renowned vocalists—from stars of the opera world like Plácido Domingo and José Carreras to Irish folk band The Chieftains, singer/songwriter and pianist Neil Sedaka, Brian May of the band Queen, rapper Warren G, and jazz singers Dee Dee Bridgewater and Diana Krall—showcasing her vast range and appreciation for music in all forms.

An Evening with Sissel

Augustin Hadelich, the internationally acclaimed violinist, curates and leads a special chamber music program that shines a light on the talents of SLSO musicians. Hadelich brings his “highly expressive and technically brilliant” (KDHX) musicality to the program, spotlighting musicians in small ensembles on the Powell Hall stage, offering a glimpse into the vast chamber music library.

We welcome acclaimed violinist Augustin Hadelich and rising star conductor Tabita Berglund for this celebration of the music, architecture, and nature of Nordic countries. Called “one of the most exciting violinists of his generation” by The New York Times, Hadelich shines in a performance of Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto, and the orchestra sets off on a journey through the countryside in Sibelius’ sweeping Second Symphony. This performance takes place within the newly renovated Powell Hall, whose expansion was designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta and was inspired by the elegant shapes of orchestral instruments.

Celebrate the legendary Chuck Berry’s birthday with hits from throughout the star’s career performed by the SLSO, his hometown orchestra. Arrangements of Berry’s songs, featuring his distinctive take on R&B and signature guitar-playing style, are accompanied by exclusive video footage and interviews. An exhibit of rare memorabilia, photos, and one of Berry’s Cadillacs will also be on display. This tribute is part of the multi-year celebration of the 100th anniversary of Chuck Berry’s birth organized by the Berry family.

This is certainly the case with Elgar’s majestic First Symphony, led in these performances by SLSO Conductor Laureate Leonard Slatkin, who also presents music of his own for a compelling U.S. premiere. Emanuel Ax, Slatkin’s dear friend and one of the most accomplished pianists of our time, takes the solo spotlight for Mozart’s adventurous Piano Concerto No. 25, a masterpiece described by Ax as pure magic.

Enjoy an evening exploring the convergence of music and visual art with musicians from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. After an introduction from CAM’s Ferring Foundation Chief Curator Dean Daderko on the exhibition Like Water, this chamber concert pairs Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte, a shape-shifting contemporary piece inspired by Haydn’s classical forms, with Claude Debussy’s luminous String Quartet in G minor. Both works embody themes of fluidity and transformation, creating artistic dialogues through sonic motion and resonance.

The St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra concludes its season with a program of passion and contrast. Prokofiev draws an arc of drama throughout his second Romeo and Juliet Suite. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Unsuk Chin pays homage to Beethoven with her angular and brassy subito con forza, while Lili Boulanger depicts the grace and promise of a spring morning with lithe woodwind and string melodies. Aiden Moon, winner of the 2025 YO Concerto Competition, brings style and elegance to Henri Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 5.

Soulful darkness touches the SLSO’s strings in Bacewicz’s long-forgotten Concerto for Strings.

Soloist Akiko Suwanai leads us through the shimmering mist of Guillaume Connesson’s Violin Concerto. In a performance honoring the pathbreaking composer Kaija Saariaho, who died last year, Ciel d’hiver (Winter Sky) begins in the orchestra’s heights, haunted piccolo shimmering like the northern lights. Magnus Lindberg’s new Viola Concerto pushes the fearless violist Lawrence Power to epic limits. And Schumann, struggling with illness, finds the warm light of dawn in the murmured fanfares of the Second Symphony.

Get ready for a night of action and suspense as the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra presents Casino Royale in concert. Immerse yourself in the world of James Bond with Daniel Craig in his debut as 007 and David Arnold's gripping score performed live. In the film, Bond is on assignment to play against a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro. This cinematic and musical journey will leave you shaken…not stirred.

In a cramped apartment, a man hunches over papers. At 52, Beethoven looks older—he is in constant pain, and rarely appears in public. He is poring over a copy of the popular poem “Ode to Joy” by Friedrich Schiller. His new symphony will be an ambitious, experimental, political work. Experience the thrill of the game as we team up with former All-Star St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright, who performs songs from his new country album. The evening features Americana classics and a special rendition of the poem “Casey at Bat” that conveys all the drama of America’s favorite pastime.

Conductor David Afkham makes his SLSO debut in a program of struggle, then exultation. In The Ring of Fire and Love, Finnish composer Outi Tarkianen explores the earth-shattering moment of a child’s birth. Pianist Saleem Ashkar brings searching intelligence to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24, dramatic music written at a time of personal joy. Brahms toiled over his First Symphony for decades, producing a life-affirming journey from darkness to light.

Music Director Stéphane Denève sends a valentine from the SLSO, saying, “Rachmaninoff’s music is a pure expression of love—the ecstasy of love, the light of love.” Nikolai Lugansky, among the supreme Rachmaninoff interpreters, is soloist in the Second Piano Concerto. Tchaikovsky celebrates the passionate connection of Romeo and Juliet, while Anna Clyne uses technology to enhance the sonic splendor of the SLSO. “With music,” says Denève, “we are never alone.”

Experience Steve Hackman's thrilling new blend of pop/R&B’s queen and classical music’s king as Beyoncé’s iconic repertoire is seamlessly interwoven with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The symphonic world’s most joyful celebration of dance becomes the backdrop to fifteen of Beyoncé’s chart-topping hits—including “Girls,” “Crazy in Love,” “Single Ladies,” “Sorry,” “Halo,” “Cuff It,” and “Texas Hold ‘Em”—in this innovative new musical fusion.

Two life-affirming musical tales narrated by two passionate storytellers. James Ehnes says of the Beethoven Violin Concerto, “It’s an incredibly uplifting, optimistic piece of music, one that makes you feel good about mankind.” Mahler’s First Symphony expresses a vast range of human emotion, from innocence to sorrow to triumph. “In Mahler,” says Music Director Stéphane Denève, “there is nowhere to hide. You must live all of his emotions.”

Maurice Ravel’s music has been with Music Director Stéphane Denève his whole life. For him, Ravel locates the pure pleasure of sound, the pleasure of color. On this program we experience some of Ravel’s many sides, from childlike wonder in Mother Goose to orchestral virtuosity in Bolero. Kirill Gerstein sets himself a formidable challenge, playing both Ravel piano concertos on one program. The first is a brilliant ode to smoky jazz clubs, the other a virtuoso work for the left hand alone.

She brings imagination and freedom to the premiere of Nina Shekhar’s new concerto. Barber’s teenaged School for Scandal Overture fizzes with energy.
