Kansas City Symphony

Kansas City, MO, United States

The Kansas City Symphony is a renowned American orchestra that has established itself as one of the top 25 orchestras in the nation. With a diverse repertoire that spans orchestral and chamber music formats, the Symphony is dedicated to presenting a wide range of musical works each season. It also fulfills a critical role as the pit orchestra for the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, further cementing its status as a cornerstone of the city's cultural landscape. Founded on the belief that music is for everyone, the Kansas City Symphony strives to serve the entirety of the Kansas City community. It operates with a vision that all community members should feel a sense of ownership and pride in the Symphony as both a cultural and civic asset. To this end, the Symphony has initiated a variety of programs and efforts aimed at fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. These initiatives are designed to assess and improve the Symphony's inclusivity and to develop new means of equity, ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to engage with and enjoy the music it offers. In an effort to grow the audience for orchestral music, the Kansas City Symphony has launched an Audience Development Initiative that will begin in fall 2023. This initiative seeks to enhance the appeal of classical music by blending performances with story-driven narratives that highlight the connections between music and the human experience. The Symphony's commitment to accessibility is further demonstrated through its Mobile Music Box program, which was conceived at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. This innovative program features a self-contained portable stage that allows the orchestra to present free, traveling chamber performances across all zip codes of Greater Kansas City. Since its inception in September 2020, the Mobile Music Box has been a key component of the Symphony's mission to make high-quality music accessible to everyone. The Kansas City Symphony's excellence has been recognized through various awards and recognitions, including Visitors’ Choice and Grammy awards, underscoring its uncompromising performance standard and leadership among American orchestras. Financially, the Symphony is well-managed and fiscally responsible, with a commitment to developing the resources necessary for the orchestra to thrive both today and in the future. This dedication to fiscal health ensures that the Symphony can continue to deliver exceptional musical experiences to the Kansas City community for years to come. The Symphony's news section highlights recent achievements, such as the appointment of Matthias Pintscher as the fifth Music Director starting in the 2024-25 season and the success of its Associate Conductor Gonzalo Farias, who won an audition for Assistant Conductor in Houston, Texas. Additionally, the Symphony celebrates the return of the Bank of America Celebration at the Station, a testament to its ongoing engagement with the community. Overall, the Kansas City Symphony stands as a beacon of musical excellence, community service, and cultural enrichment, continually innovating and expanding its outreach to ensure that the joy of music is shared with all.
