Genesis

Genesis Opera Theatre is an operatic and theatrical company co-founded by Cynthia Leigh, a distinguished performer known for her dynamic stage presence and vocal versatility. Leigh's performances are characterized by her remarkable control, allowing her to shift from powerful vocalizations to delicate whispers, captivating audiences with her emotional depth and fidelity to the original works of composers and librettists. The inception of Genesis Opera Theatre was the realization of Leigh's long-held aspiration to channel her passion for opera and theatre into her own venture. In addition to her operatic endeavors, Leigh has an extensive background in theater, having participated in a multitude of musicals and plays across Southern California. Her directing accomplishments include productions such as "Amahl and the Night Visitors" and "Goyescas." In the current season, Leigh is set to perform as Madame Goldentrill in the company's production of "The Impresario." Her past performances with Genesis Opera Theatre include leading roles in "Suor Angelica," "I Pagliacci," and "Amahl and the Night Visitors," among others. Leigh's career also spans performances with other reputable companies, such as the Independent Opera Company, Redlands Opera Theater, Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera, Riverside Lyric Opera, and appearances at the National Opera Center in New York City. Leigh's concert repertoire is equally impressive, featuring soprano solos in the Requiems of Fauré, Verdi, and Mozart, and performances across notable venues in California, including the San Diego Civic Center and the Los Angeles Theater. Doug Friedman, another key figure in the founding of Genesis Opera Theatre, brings a wealth of experience from his background in television writing, production, and marketing, notably contributing to the launch of "Access Hollywood." Currently serving as the Director of Communications for the Alzheimer's Association in San Diego County, Friedman's transition to producing live entertainment marks a significant expansion of his professional scope. As an actor, he has been involved in several musicals in San Diego, taking on roles in "Sweeney Todd," "Les Miserables," and "Beauty & the Beast," to name a few. Genesis Opera Theatre prides itself on its inclusive ethos, welcoming volunteers to support its growth and development. The company continues to expand its artistic reach in 2022, inviting community members to contribute to its success in various capacities.
