Enchanting Harmonies: Baltimore Choral Arts' Festive Celebrations

Baltimore Choral Arts returns to the Basilica at 7:30 pm* on Tuesday, December 3, sharing the gift of song for the annual Christmas with Choral Arts concert! The Baltimore Choral Arts chorus, led by Music Director Anthony Blake Clark, will perform a lively selection of Christmas songs, traditional carols, and festive sing-alongs.

Baltimore Choral Arts opens the 2024-25 season by connecting to our past in our first subscription concert, Sacred Heritage, pairing a unique selection of Benjamin Britten’s choral works with the iconic and retrospective Duruflé Requiem. We will be joined by the students of our CoroLAB program for a performance of See Me by Reena Esmail.

Handel’s timeless Messiah ushers in the start of the holiday season, from its triumphant “Hallelujah” chorus to the hauntingly beautiful “He Was Despised.” This season, NatPhil breathes new life into a masterpiece that has captivated audiences for over 250 years, drawing on the storytelling of soloists Soprano Aundi Marie Moore, Mezzo Soprano Lucia Bradford, Tenor Norman Shankle, and Baritone Jorell William. Maestro Piotr Gajewski leads the NatPhil Orchestra & Chorale and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society in an unforgettable presentation of the Messiah that will dazzle new audiences and remind us all of the enduring splendor of this holiday classic.

From the quicksilver charms of Mercury to the mystical stillness of Neptune, The Planets of Gustav Holst offer an immersive tour of the vast solar system. Composer in Residence James Lee III peers through the open roof of a festive sukkah and beholds the even greater distance to Orion’s Nebula, a nursery for newborn stars in the constellation that has captivated humans for millennia. Anna Clyne’s saxophone concerto takes us out of the ordinary world and into a fantastical realm ruled by a wailing banshee.

Experienced Baltimore singers are invited to join Baltimore Choral Arts* at the Peabody Institute for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Baltimore’s own internationally renowned conductor Marin Alsop. We will rehearse and perform as an audience choir while Marin Alsop conducts and coaches graduate students and instrumentalists.

Peabody conducting studio alumnus and BCAS Music Director Anthony Blake Clark will coach the audience choir in two sessions before the event. On the evening of the Come-and-Sing at Peabody, you’ll be one of hundreds singing this transcendent piece as we are led by Marin and her brilliant conducting studio!
