The Delaware County Symphony (DCS) is a notable orchestra with a rich history dating back to 1971, when it was initially known as the Media Community Symphony. The organization underwent a significant transformation in 1975 when it merged with the Springfield Sinfonietta, leading to the selection of Roman Pawlowski as the music director of the newly combined group in the following year. For a period, the DCS operated under the auspices of the Delaware County Community College. However, in 1987, the symphony made a strategic move to the Life Center at Neumann College, now recognized as Neumann University, located in Aston, Pennsylvania. The DCS has seen several changes in leadership over the years. After an impressive tenure, Mr. Pawlowski retired in 2010 and was succeeded by Jeremy Gill. Dr. Gill led the symphony until 2013 when he moved to Boston, and Tim Ribchester stepped in as the interim music director until 2015. Joseph Caminiti took over the role in the subsequent year but resigned in 2019. The current music director, Sebastian Grand, was appointed in 2021, bringing a new vision to the symphony's future. Throughout its existence, the Delaware County Symphony has showcased its musical talents at various esteemed regional venues. These include performances at the Kimmel Center Perelman Theater, Wilmington Grand Opera House, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Media Theatre, and Rose Tree Park. In addition to these larger venues, the DCS has also been committed to community engagement, providing small ensemble performances at local places of worship, parks, and commercial properties. The DCS was officially incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1988 and is governed by a Board of Directors. The board is composed of individuals elected from both within the symphony orchestra and the wider community, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives and expertise in its governance. With a history of over five decades, the Delaware County Symphony continues to enrich the cultural landscape of the region, offering a variety of concerts and educational programs to the community it serves.
