Anchorage Opera

Anchorage Opera (AO) is a preeminent cultural institution in Alaska, recognized for its contribution to the arts and community engagement. Established in 1962, AO has grown to become the largest producer of performing arts in the state and is considered one of America's leading regional opera companies. The National Endowment for the Arts has identified AO as one of the six most promising opera companies in the United States. The origins of Anchorage Opera can be traced back to the collaborative efforts of opera singer Marita Farrell and philanthropist Evangeline Atwood. Their vision and dedication led to the production of grand opera in Anchorage, initially featuring cameo presentations of works such as "Rigoletto" and "Faust," and later full-length productions including "Cosi fan tutte," "The Elixir of Love," and "Carmen." The company officially incorporated as Anchorage Civic Opera in 1962 and has since been a cornerstone of the Alaskan arts scene. In the mid-1960s, Elvera Voth, then director of the Anchorage Community Chorus, took over the leadership of AO, bringing with her a passion for the performing arts that spurred the company's growth. Under her guidance, AO attracted influential figures such as Jan Ingram, the company’s first full-time professional manager, and Gloria Allen, an opera singer, producer, and administrator who contributed significantly to the company's success. By 1985, AO's reputation for excellence had been firmly established, leading to recognition by the National Endowment for the Arts. The company has continued to evolve, with Reed W. Smith taking the helm as General Director in 2014. Under Smith's leadership, AO has premiered several operas, including contemporary works by American composers, and has been actively engaged in civic practice, being one of seven opera companies selected by OPERA America to form a Civic Action Group in 2017. AO is known for its collaborative efforts with various Alaskan arts and cultural organizations, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, and the Alaska Children’s Choir, among others. The company's commitment to community and education is evident through partnerships with the Anchorage School District, offering free student dress rehearsals, and Flash MOBperas to bring opera to unexpected places.
