In its 30th Anniversary season, Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns celebrating 3 decades of “highly committed artistry” (Dance Informa) under the direction of co-Founders Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. During its two-week season at The Joyce, Complexions brings a retrospective suite honoring Rhoden’s choreographic legacy, featuring audience favorites Ave Maria, Growth, Naked Perfume, Mercy, Higher Ground, and other high-octane works with music ranging from Tchaikovsky and Handel to Earth Wind and Fire and U2.

The groundbreaking Complexions Contemporary Ballet celebrates its 29th season under the direction of co-founding Artistic Directors, Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. The program includes works by guest choreographers Justin Peck, Ricardo Amarante, and Jenn Freeman. A premiere by Complexions Principal Choreographer Dwight Rhoden, set to the raw acoustic music of U2, rounds out the program. MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and celebrated poetjournalist, Aaron Dworkin will make his debut as Complexions’ Poet-in-Residence during the engagement

Hailed as a “matchless American dance company” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, led by the legendary Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, has captivated audiences for nearly three decades with their singular approach of reinventing dance and contemporary ballet. The evening’s dynamic program of Rhoden works includes a NOBA-commissioned world premiere to the live music of New Orleans native and visionary jazz musician Chief Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott) and Ballad Unto, a high-intensity work to the music of J.S. Bach. The evening closes with LOVE ROCKS, set to the Rock ‘n Soul music of GRAMMY® Award winning singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz. One of the most recognized performing arts brands in the world, Complexions’ entirely new and exciting vision of human movement has been presented on five continents in over 20 countries.

Hudson River Park and The Joyce Theater present the Hudson River Dance Festival, assembling some of today’s most exciting dance companies for two spectacular free shows, Thursday, June 8 and Friday, June 9.

The showcase celebrates the vibrant voices and diverse styles our city has to offer. Set against the incomparable backdrop of a Hudson River sunset, this two-day festival brings world-class performances to HRPK’s Pier 63 lawn. This year, street dance and tap performances come to our stage, along with ballet and modern dance.
