Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana

Palermo, Italy

Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana was established in 1951 by a Sicilian Regional law. Only in 1958, after recruiting its musicians, did it begin an intense concert program that would significantly impact Sicilian and national music. Today, following the dissolution of three of the four RAI orchestras, its size (92 members) and similarities can only be found with the RAI National Orchestra in Turin and the Santa Cecilia National Orchestra in Rome. The first symphony concerts were conducted in Palermo by Georges Sebastian and Jean Martinon. Immediately thereafter, the Orchestra took part in the Puccini centenary celebrations in Torre del Lago. A year after the first concert, artistic director Ottavio Ziino launched the "Giornate di Musica Contemporanea" (Days of Contemporary Music), making a decisive contribution to the culture and musical tastes of Palermo's audiences. In 1960, a collaboration with the "Settimane Internazionali di Nuova Musica" (International Weeks of New Music) began, which in the 1970s made Palermo the international center of reference for the so-called post-Darmstadt avant-garde.
