Broadway Grand Rapids, a prominent organization in the performing arts community, was established in September of 1988. It launched its inaugural season with a production of "South Pacific," starring the acclaimed Robert Goulet. The organization's core mission is to present the very best of national touring Broadway productions to the Grand Rapids audience. Since 2010, the Broadway series has been sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and has featured nearly every major Broadway title, including "Les Misérables," "Phantom of the Opera," "Wicked," and "Hamilton." The impact of Broadway Grand Rapids extends beyond the stage, as it serves as an economic catalyst for the local community. The high-caliber shows draw audiences that contribute to the vibrancy of the city's restaurants, hotels, and other cultural venues. Furthermore, Broadway Grand Rapids is committed to educational outreach, providing students at schools and colleges with access to performances and performers, as well as creating unique backstage opportunities for service clubs and other organizations. All presentations by Broadway Grand Rapids take place in DeVos Performance Hall, which is strategically situated in downtown Grand Rapids. In 2019, the organization entered a partnership agreement with Broadway Across America, enhancing its ability to bring the latest shows from New York directly to Grand Rapids audiences. Broadway Across America (BAA), part of the John Gore Organization family of companies, is a leading presenter of first-class touring productions in North America. BAA operates in 48 markets and has over 450,000 subscribers, presenting shows such as "The Lion King," "Wicked," "The Book of Mormon," "The Phantom of the Opera," and "Hamilton," as well as productions like "Ain’t Too Proud," "Beautiful," "Cats," "Chicago," "Dear Evan Hansen," "Mean Girls," "Moulin Rouge," and "To Kill A Mockingbird." DeVos Performance Hall is a 2,543-seat performing arts theater located within the Grand Rapids convention center, DeVos Place. It is home to performances by Broadway Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Grand Rapids Ballet, and Opera Grand Rapids, offering an intimate setting for a variety of shows. Broadway Grand Rapids also engages the community through its BGR Backstage Buzz podcast, which provides insights into the behind-the-scenes aspects of Broadway productions, featuring conversations with cast and crew, community arts advocates, and partners. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors comprising community arts advocates and professionals from various sectors, all dedicated to supporting and promoting the performing arts in Grand Rapids. The 2023-2024 Broadway Grand Rapids season is generously sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, among other supporters, and the organization continues to invite the public to join their eClub for pre-sale announcements and event information. Broadway Grand Rapids is a beacon of cultural opportunity, contributing to the city's reputation as a destination full of vibrant theatrical experiences.
