An inspector leads the investigation and questions the suspects, the orchestra's instrument families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. They all seem to have a solid alibi. So who is the culprit? Through this thrilling search and thanks to Nathaniel Stookey's original music, discover the orchestra's instruments and learn the most astonishing secrets of classical music.

Investigation at the orchestra: The composer is dead

Brazilian percussionist based in Belgium, Renato Martins is renowned for his mastery and research into new techniques on the udu and cajon. With his Trio Misturado (7-string guitar, flutes, and percussion), he revisits the traditional "choro" (a kind of joyful lament) with new works, where refinement and improvisation enrich the warmth of Brazilian melodies and rhythms. Other styles drawn from Brazil's great musical wealth will be explored, with the presence of three prestigious guests on vocals, 7-string guitar, and cavaquinho (4-string guitar). An evening filled with poetry, epics, and rhythmic variations.

This concert pays tribute to clarinettist Martine Leblanc and trombonist Alain Pire, two pillars of the OPRL, born in 1960 (the same year the Orchestra was founded), who will be retiring during the 25-26 season. These two musicians will be joined by a pianist, a string quartet, and the entire trombone and tuba section, in an extremely varied program of works (including tangos) by Dutch, German, Belgian, Argentinian, French, Spanish, and Italian composers. The concert will be presented by Hans Reul, a musicologist, former journalist (BRF), and trombonist himself.

A regular guest of the OPRL, Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki returns to Liège for a recital conceived as a formidable selection of dances from all origins, whether it be Martinu's Czech Dances , Falla 's Spanish Dances from La Vie bref , Szymanowski's Four Polish Dances , Schubert's German Dances , Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances , or Ginastera's Argentinian Dances . This impressive ensemble is complemented by emblematic works such as Chopin's Grande valse brillante , Piazzolla's Libertango , and Falla's famous Ritual Fire Dance .

The challenge? Bring together the musicians of the OPRL, the orchestra, and the children's choir of El Sistema Liège on stage for a unique performance. Come listen to these musicians, young and old, while discovering an original film, conceived and produced with children. This film, screened live, will trace the history of cinema, from silent to talkies, from black and white to color, exploring the impact of editing and the use of sound effects. To enhance the experience, its soundtrack will be performed live by the Orchestra, joined on stage by 150 children from the non-profit organization ReMuA.

Since 2014, on the occasion of the Fête de la Musique, the OPRL Classic Academy has allowed students from music schools in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to play—often for the first time—in concert with a symphony orchestra. While the winner of the "Orchestra Prize" is invited to play again the following year with the OPRL, the winner of the "Audience Prize" is invited to perform at a chamber music concert that allows them to share their favorite pieces and showcase the diversity of their talent.

Classic Academy Laureate

A regular at concert halls, Korean organist Shin-Young Lee has transcribed Saint-Saëns's famous Carnival of the Animals for the organ. Conceived in 1886 for a private Mardi Gras performance, this "great zoological fantasy" is presented as a series of pastiches depicting a wide variety of animals: lion, hens and roosters, horses, turtles, elephant, kangaroos, fish, donkey, cuckoo, birds, swan... It is narrated here, with the vivid and vivid texts of Elodie Fondacci, by actress and journalist Caroline Veyt (RTBF). The ensemble is completed by excerpts from Tchaikovsky's magical The Nutcracker and Borodin's  spectacular Polovtsian Dances .

The Organ Carnival

Composed between the "heroic" Symphony and the monumental Fifth , Beethoven's Fourth Symphony (1807) was appreciated for its modest dimensions and joyful atmosphere. Schumann described it as "a slender daughter of Greece between two Nordic giants ." Emilie Mayer (1812-1883), sometimes called "the female Beethoven," was an accomplished composer, sculptor, and co-director of the Berlin Opera. She devoted her life to music, writing eight symphonies and seven remarkable overtures. This stream of Romantic music is completed by Mendelssohn's Second Concerto , in which the talented Russian violinist Alena Baeva would make her Liège debut.

Thanks to Mozart, the horn acquired its first letters of nobility at a time when it was considered only as an instrument for hunting and the outdoors. Both noble and joyful, enriched by a slow movement imbued with great tenderness, the Second Concerto (1783) highlights the new head of the OPRL horn section, Margaux Ortman. A mature work, Mozart's Symphony No. 39 (1788) is inspired by the theater, and is similar to Don Giovanni in its incessant quest for colors, the presence of deep and meditative passages, and this ability to shape melodies like true lines of song. Jünglingshaus

Lionel Bringuier immerses himself in Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony (1893) as he shares his quest for happiness, his emotional breakdown, and his unhappiness. Rarely has a composer probed the deepest emotions with such acuity, with the heightened sensitivity born of his unspeakable suffering, thus elevating this ultimate masterpiece to the pinnacle of music. The symphony's subtitle, "Pathétique," was aptly given by the composer's brother, Modest, who was aware of all the tensions running through these pages. The OPRL's Music Director will be sure to delve into the heart of this music of extremes during the now traditional encounter at the end of the concert.

In 1899, at the age of 25, Schoenberg composed The Transfigured Night , a string sextet inspired by a poem about a couple's nighttime walk on the moor. The woman confesses to the man that she is expecting a child that is not his, but he forgives her and promises to raise the child as his own. Schoenberg gave his consent to the piano trio version that his student Eduard Steuermann would create in 1932. Presented by Guy Lemaire, president of the Friends of the Orchestra, this concert also benefits from the projection of illustrations by Audrey Gallez, interviews with the composer, and surtitles allowing the audience to follow Richard Dehmel's poem.

The Transfigured Night

At the invitation of its Artistic Director, Renaud Capuçon, the OPRL made its debut with Lionel Bringuier at the Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival, immersing itself in Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony (1893) as he shared his quest for happiness, his emotional breakdown, and his unhappiness. Joined by Emmanuel Pahud, a virtuoso flautist among the world's finest, the Orchestra and its conductor launched into the formidable passages of Khachaturian's Flute Concerto , a work that is at times dramatic and at times exuberant, in which the composer also reveals his Armenian roots.

Between flying balls, swinging tap shoes, a conductor on a bicycle, and an orchestra that goes off the rails (to better surprise), prepare yourself for an extraordinary orchestral show. On the program: laughter, surprises, and dazzling music featuring famous tunes and revisited melodies. And for the more daring... hop on your bike and head to the Philharmonic Hall with the conductor!

On the occasion of its centenary (it was founded in 1926 by the Swiss conductor, patron, and industrialist Paul Sacher), the prestigious Basel Chamber Orchestra is making its first stop in Liège. A major interpreter of Viennese classicism, it will perform Mozart's Symphony No. 31 , written at the age of 22 in Paris, as well as his emblematic "Turkish" Concerto, with South American violinist Bomsori Kim, a new star on the Deutsche Grammophon label. True to its history of interpreting contemporary works (having premiered pieces by Bartók, Stravinsky, and Honegger), the Orchestra will perform the new work of American composer Mike Svoboda.

Back in Liège, pianist Piotr Anderszewski devoted himself entirely to Brahms's last works for solo piano. After having abandoned the piano for 13 years to compose his 3rd and 4th Symphonies , numerous lieder and chamber music works, Brahms wrote his pianistic testament during the summers of 1892 and 1893. These 20 pieces ( op. 116 to 119 ), which Brahms nicknamed "lullabies of my suffering", a mixture of pain and serenity, constitute a kind of personal diary in which Clara Schumann saw "an inexhaustible treasure of masterpieces" .

In France, at the political turning point between Louis XIV and Louis XV, the viola da gamba was experiencing its last hours of glory: the violin was beginning to take center stage. "The Golden Hour" here refers to the periods after sunrise and before sunset when the light changes: the Ensemble Masques immerses us in these years of cohabitation, even confrontation, between a viola soon to be in the twilight of its life, and a violin at the dawn of its solo destiny. A program of trio sonatas for a subtle conversation, between elegance, inventiveness and virtuosity, with the best soloists of the moment.

The Golden Hour

The OPRL and Lucie Leguay embark on a journey to the heart of 20th- century America , with the nine Symphonic Dances from Bernstein's masterpiece West Side Story , reorganized into an orchestral suite by the composer in 1960. Commissioned by Nadia Boulanger, Copland's Organ Symphony (1924), a student of the great French pedagogue, blends modernism, jazz influences, and virtuosity, capturing the bold energy of the United States in the 1920s. Florence Price's work is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. Conceived on a Negro spiritual theme , her vibrant Concert Overture No. 1 , premiered in Chicago in 1939, embodies all the richness of her African-American roots.

West Side Story

A beloved star of French piano, Hélène Grimaud also maintains a deep connection with the United States and American music, through emblematic works such as Gershwin's Concerto (1925), imbued with the spirit of jazz, of which she has delivered a fascinating recording. Also composed in the United States in 1943, Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra offers each family of instruments the opportunity to shine through solos of breathtaking virtuosity. A similar virtuosity is found in Salonen's Helix (2005), a study in acceleration where musical motifs unfold in spirals, like a helix.

Gershwin, Piano Concerto

This is a concert entirely dedicated to one of the greatest composers of the 19th century  . Born in Pesaro (on the Adriatic coast) in 1792 and died in Paris in 1868, Gioachino Rossini is the author of some of the most famous operas in the world. Five string players from the OPRL join forces to resonate the well-known themes from the overtures to The Barber of Seville and William Tell , but also to rediscover Rossini's chamber music through duets and sonatas, all presented with humor and lightness by Pierre Solot, exceptionally borrowed from the Music Factory series.

The Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia revisits Schubert's most famous quartet, Death and the Maiden , in Gustav Mahler's version for string orchestra. Mahler, sensitive to Schubert's pathos, transforms it into a drama filled with existential concerns and questions. Composed at the age of 12, Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in A minor remains marked by the elegance of classicism, and allows us to hear for the first time in Liège the elegant playing and colorful palette of the Franco-Hungarian pianist Suzana Bartal.

Set in Verona, where two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, share an ancestral hatred, it tells the story of the most famous couple of all time. Prokofiev's powerful music, performed by the OPRL, expresses with rare intensity this true but tragic love, crushed by the weight of old family grudges...

O Romeo!

There's nothing like a concert celebrating love in all its forms on the eve of Valentine's Day! Fauré's Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande (1898), both delicate and sensual, plunges into the mysterious world of Maeterlinck, where love is inextricably intertwined with fate. As for Prokofiev's Suite from Romeo and Juliet , taken from Shakespeare's masterpiece, it evokes all-consuming passion, between lyricism and heightened violence, leading us into the tragic drama of two star-crossed lovers. The three songs by the Argentinian Golijov (in 2002), originally written for the soprano Dawn Upshaw, are little gems inspired by poems by Sally Potter, Rosalía de Castro, and Emily Dickinson.

The music, by Nobuo Uematsu ("the Beethoven of video game music" according to Classic FM) and Masashi Hamauzu, now takes on a life of its own in the form of a vast fresco for full orchestra: "Final Symphony". Brooklyn-based composer (1990) known for her collaborations with prestigious institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum and the National Film Board of Canada, Elori Saxl surrounds herself with a classical trio and enriches her soundscapes at the borders of minimalism and jazz with a new classical dimension. Her albums The Blue of Distance (2021) and Drifts & Surfaces (2024) have received critical acclaim, evoking the gushing minimalism of 1970s Steve Reich, the talent of electronic precursors Matmos, or the dramatic harmonics of Philip Glass's Glassworks . A disciple of Alicia de Larrocha and Daniel Barenboim, the great Spanish pianist Javier Perianes returns to Liège for a program largely dedicated to Spain, at the initiative of EUROPALIA. First, he brings together Falla's early pieces with works by Chopin that seem to have inspired them. Second, he brings together Falla's Four Spanish Pieces , premiered in Paris in 1908, with four excerpts from Albéniz's formidable collection Iberia , an absolute masterpiece of piano literature whose colors and exuberance constitute a formidable homage to his native country.

Javier Perianes

Although Bruckner placed his symphonic work in the tradition of Beethoven, he could not equal the great Ludwig: his Ninth Symphony remained unfinished, with several incomplete versions of the finale. Aware of his imminent end, he left a majestic score that the extraordinary Marko Letonja, a regular guest of the OPRL, will magnify: a devastating scherzo framed by slow movements that resonate like a final farewell to life. A Christmas in the snow

For its Christmas concert, the OPRL, under the direction of Austrian conductor Christoph Campestrini, explores some major works by composers inspired by the melancholic beauty of winter. In his Seasons , Glazunov delicately evokes the winter season, with its frost, ice, hail, and of course, snow! Taken from an opera about the life of Ukrainian villagers, Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve suite is adorned with Slavic colors and irresistible picturesque dances. If there's one child who refuses to grow up, it's Peter Pan! Dreaming his life in color is his credo, and with a pinch of pixie dust, he takes the whole Orchestra to Neverland. Founded in 2012 and claiming to be part of the "New Classics" movement, Echo Collective combines training at the Brussels Conservatory with contemporary music through two of its iconic projects: the hypnotic soundscapes of Mirror Image (2024) and a tribute to the melancholy of the late Jóhann Jóhannsson in a suite also inspired by the German abstract painter Thilo Heinzmann ( 12 Conversations , 2019, Deutsche Grammophon). Echo Collective

"Symphonic Hour": a new series of short, non-stop concerts to savor the best of classical music. Tchaikovsky's passionate outbursts open the ball with one of the most luminous works of the Romantic repertoire, the Violin Concerto (1881). Marc Bouchkov, a laureate of the prestigious Tchaikovsky and Montreal Competitions, is one of the finest interpreters of the work today. Served by an incandescent orchestration, the symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini draws its inspiration from Dante's Divine Comedy , evoking the eternal damnation of Francesca and her brother-in-law Paolo, condemned to hell for their sacrilegious love.

In addition to Mozart's Quintet , which almost serves as a "chamber concerto," and Poulenc's Sextet , with its charming gaiety and expressiveness, discover the sparkling Sextet by Louise Farrenc, one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century , the Quartet for piano and winds by Jean-Michel Damase, with its very French sap, but also Samuel Barber's Summer Music , which highlights each instrument of the wind quintet.

At just 18 years old, Russian pianist Alexandra Dovgan has a career that has already taken her all over Europe and as far away as Buenos Aires and Detroit. A protégé of Grigory Sokolov, who predicted "a great future" for her , she stands out with a sound of incredible beauty and precision, served by an authentic personality. After the darkest and most passionate of Schubert's last three sonatas, she takes on Franck's Prelude, Chorale and Fugue , a combined homage to Bach and Liszt, then to the young Prokofiev - just 21 years old - who wrote a 2nd Sonata already tending towards modernism.

Composed in 1943, Shostakovich's Eighth is the most tragic of his three war symphonies. Its sarcasm, despair, and violent outbursts, which maintain tension until the very end, nevertheless give way to a denouement full of hope and renewal. Violinist Lorenzo Gatto has charted a remarkable career since winning Second Prize at the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Competition. For his return to Liège, he will perform Prokofiev's moving First Concerto  (1923), a work of striking intensity, brilliantly combining profound lyricism with passages steeped in sarcasm.

In recent years, violinist Renaud Capuçon has also distinguished himself as a conductor. With the OPRL, he takes us into the tender and loving world of Wagner's Siegfried-Idyll , a work dedicated to his wife Cosima, where themes from his opera Siegfried resonate . He also explores this theme of marital intimacy through the Interludes from Richard Strauss's opera Intermezzo , while highlighting, this time with the bow, the inexhaustible freshness of Mozart's violin, without forgetting to present the new creation of Camille Pépin, a young Frenchwoman whose energetic music cultivates joyful atmospheres.

Siegfried Idyll

Born from the encounter of traditional musicians from the heart of the Beskydy (Carpathian mountain range) with contemporary artists from Silesia, Vołosi quickly forged a unique sound, the fruit of their curiosity and completely free improvisation sessions. Vołosi's bowed strings blend the captivating beauty of the melodies with a raw and frenetic energy, layered with echoes of rock, punk, jazz and even film music... From joy to heartbreak, from excitement to calm, from rage to euphoria, the emotion is total.

Poland: Volosi

A tragic opera for soprano and orchestra in one act, lasting around forty minutes, Poulenc's La voix humaine was written in 1958 to a text by Jean Cocteau. This long and moving telephone monologue by a woman abandoned by her lover is performed by the Belgian soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet and accompanied on the organ (starting from Poulenc's piano version) by Yoann Tardivel, in a sober staging, conceived for this concert. The prelude to Pelléas et Mélisande by Fauré and the Three Dances for organ by Jehan Alain, subtitled Joys, Mournings, Struggles , provide an ideal introduction.

The human voice

Inspired by two poems in Walloon by the Liège writer Henri Simon (1856-1939) that tell the tragedy of an oak tree sacrificed on the altar of human greed, Patrick Leterme's new work takes the form of a choral and symphonic performance for orchestra, choir, and percussion. The composition, combining symphonic writing, sounds of nature (foliage, branches, logs), and songs inspired by folk traditions, creates an original score, somewhere between tradition and modernity, that combines the relationship to the land with contemporary ecological issues.

"The only difference between a madman and me is that I'm not mad," said Salvador Dalí. While some composers were clearly on the verge of madness themselves, others drew inspiration from it or drew on it to push the boundaries of creativity and music. "Non sei solo." You are not alone... This evasive phrase, which echoes the inscription "Sei solo" (six solos) on the score of Bach's six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, written after the death of his first wife Maria Barbara in 1720, demonstrates the attention that Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti pay to the composer, across the centuries. It is an opportunity for the ensemble to highlight the creative period that followed this bereavement, in Köthen, particularly prolific years when most of Bach's concertos were written. The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich, the immense Russian composer, born in Saint Petersburg in 1906 and died in Moscow in 1975. In the new series "Lionel Bringuier", the Music Director of the OPRL, joined by the formidable pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, invites us on a sonic journey that crosses continents and fuses cultures. Written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Orchestra, the Fourth Symphony (1930) was revised 17 years later in the USSR by Prokofiev, who thus completed an expressionist and frenetic work, with a martial finale. The Concerto "The Egyptian", completed in Cairo in 1896, succumbed to the fashion for orientalism, notably with the revival of a Nubian song collected by Saint-Saëns during a cruise on the Nile. Finally, An American in Paris , with its jazzy rhythms and urban energy, concludes this journey with a vibrant homage by Gershwin to the French capital.

A champion of Norwegian music, Edvard Grieg composed only two string quartets, the second of which is unfinished. The String Quartet No. 1 in G minor was premiered in Cologne on October 29, 1878, by the Heckmann Quartet. After hearing it in Wiesbaden, Liszt decided to perform it immediately in Rome, which earned the work a rather unexpected reception. As for the short string quartet Crisantemi (" Chrysanthemums "), it was composed by Puccini in 1890, in memory of Amedeo of Savoy, former King of Spain, and includes two themes later taken up in the final scene of the opera Manon Lescaut . First Prize winner at the ARD Competition in Munich in 2022 and Rising Star of the European Concert Halls (ECHO) in 2024-2025, Viennese pianist Lukas Sternath highlights the perfection of proportions in Schubert's penultimate sonata, the spiritual depth of Liszt's Funérailles , honoring three martyrs of the Hungarian Revolution (1849), and the rich writing of Prokofiev's 8th Sonata (1943), the last of the three "war sonatas." On the occasion of the opening of the Royal Juillet Musical de Saint-Hubert, the OPRL brings with it César Franck's impious knight, a cursed hunter who is one of the darkest heroes of Romanticism.
