The renowned Dover Quartet, named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years, makes its first appearance of the season on this two-work program, which includes Mendelssohn’s last chamber music work—the passionate String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 80, which the composer wrote while consumed with grief over the sudden loss of his beloved sister Fanny and just two months before his own sudden death at the age of 38. The Dover also plays the less-well-known but also powerful String Quartet No. 4 by the 20th-century Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who saw her reputation grow after World War II. The quartet is at once forward-looking (a stance Bacewicz was firmly dedicated to) and folkloristic.

This performance will be the first time it will be heard in the metroplex.

In this season-finale concert, violinist John Storgårds and pianist Kirill Gerstein play Janáček’s Violin Sonata, which is noted for both its urgency and lyricism, and, for the first time ever, Gerstein joins forces with the Dover Quartet for a performance of one of the standouts of the chamber music repertoire: Dvořák’s rousing Piano Quintet, Op. 81. The modal harmonies and improvisational feel of Janáček’s sonata coupled with the dumka and Bohemian dances in Dvořák’s quintet offers an invigorating taste of the folk music these two composers brought from their shared homeland and onto the international concert stage.

Members of the Dover Quartet join other Festival artists in the youthfully exuberant, Classical-era Sonata a quattro No. 1, written by Rossini when he was 12 years old, and Brahms’s sweeping String Sextet in G Major. Between the two works, the Festival presents the US premiere of a commissioned quintet by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, who Gramophone notes “[fuses] jazz and classical idioms” and “draws on her Lapland roots and on the mystery and melancholy of life in the north.”

The Dover Quartet draws from the lineage of the distinguished Guarneri, Cleveland, and Vermeer quartets. Its members studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where they were mentored extensively by Shmuel Ashkenasi, James Dunham, Norman Fischer, Kenneth Goldsmith, Joseph Silverstein, Arnold Steinhardt, Michael Tree, and Peter Wiley. It was at Curtis that the Dover Quartet formed, and its name pays tribute to Dover Beach by fellow Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber.

Anna Polonsky is widely in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. She has appeared with the Moscow Virtuosi, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, and many others. Ms. Polonsky has collaborated with the Guarneri, Orion, Daedalus, and Shanghai Quartets, and with such musicians as Mitsuko Uchida, Yo-Yo Ma, David Shifrin, Richard Goode, Emanuel Ax, Arnold Steinhardt, Peter Wiley, and Jaime Laredo. She has performed chamber music at festivals such as Marlboro, Chamber Music Northwest, Seattle, Music@Menlo, Cartagena, Bard, and Caramoor, as well as at Bargemusic in New York City.

We begin with Schubert’s Quartettsatz, one of the pieces that helped pave the road to the Romantic era, followed by the première of Marc-André Hamelin’s lush Piano Quintet, heard in its recently completed version for the first time, and we end with Dvořák’s Piano Trio in F Minor, perhaps the composer’s most romantic outpouring and one that owes much to his mentor, Johannes Brahms.
