The Traverse Symphony Orchestra (TSO), initially established as The Northwestern Michigan Symphony Orchestra in 1952 by community leader Elnora Milliken, has significantly evolved from its origins as a small group of volunteer musicians. Located in northern Michigan, the TSO is recognized as the region's premier performing arts ensemble and a professional, part-time orchestra. It boasts a core of over 60 contracted musicians who are drawn from the local area, with many affiliated with the Interlochen Center for the Arts and regional school districts. Additionally, the orchestra attracts talented individuals from across the state, including cities like Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Kevin Rhodes since September 2001, the TSO has experienced a period of artistic growth and acclaim. Rhodes' tenure has been marked by the introduction of challenging repertoires, substantial pay increases for the musicians, the engagement of high-caliber players from throughout Michigan, and a significant enhancement in the orchestra's artistic quality. The TSO's innovative concert seasons often feature renowned guest artists from both the national and international circuits. The TSO is dedicated to providing educational opportunities and community enrichment through exceptional musical experiences, as articulated in its mission statement. With a vision to serve as a cultural model for the region, the orchestra aims to excite a diverse and growing audience through artistic excellence, strong leadership, and sustainable operations. The organization is supported by a full-time professional staff of three, a part-time staff of four, and a 20-member Board of Directors. A dedicated group of volunteers also contributes to the TSO's operations. As a non-profit corporation, the TSO relies on memberships, ticket sales, donations, corporate sponsorships, and grants for financial support. The orchestra's commitment to the community extends beyond performances, as it offers a range of educational programs and outreach initiatives. These include the Community Music School, Encore Symphonic Winds, Traverse Symphony Suzuki School, and various online classes. The TSO also engages with the community through its "TSO in the Schools" program and "Students at the Symphony" initiative, fostering a love for music among younger audiences. As the TSO enters its 71st season, it stands both artistically and fiscally robust, with the staff and board of directors actively developing a long-term strategic plan to steer the organization's future direction. The Traverse Symphony Orchestra's enduring contribution to the cultural landscape of northern Michigan not only enhances the region's artistic profile but also contributes to its appeal as a destination for tourists, artists, new residents, and businesses. For those interested in joining the orchestra, the TSO holds auditions and invites inquiries from musicians looking to be added to their list of substitutes. Executive Director Kedrik Merwin can be contacted for further information regarding employment and musician openings. The TSO's historical significance, community involvement, and artistic achievements are encapsulated in its journey from a community amateur ensemble to a professional regional symphony, a transformation that has enriched the cultural fabric of northern Michigan for over seven decades.
