Rochester Symphony Orchestra

The Rochester Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is a distinguished musical institution that has been a part of the cultural fabric of Rochester, Michigan, for over six decades. Established in 1961, the RSO originated under the Department of Adult Education of the Rochester Board of Education, with a group of passionate musicians aiming to bring the joy of music to their community. Throughout its formative years, the orchestra underwent significant growth and evolution, guided by a series of dedicated conductors. Frederick Johnson (1961-1963), Richard Goldsworthy (1963-1970), Alonzo Seaboldt (1970-1975), and Ed Steinhardt (1975-1978) each played a pivotal role in building the orchestra's presence and establishing it as a vital cultural asset in the greater Rochester area. In 1965, the orchestra achieved self-sufficiency with the help of The Association of Rochester Community Orchestra, Inc. (ARCO). Initially composed mainly of volunteer musicians, the RSO's operations were supported by ticket sales, board members, and devoted patrons who covered the musicians' expenses. The orchestra's independence was further solidified during the tenure of Music Director James Hohmeyer (1978-2001), who steered the RSO back to its original name and transitioned it to professional musicians, thereby enhancing the quality of its performances. The RSO's reputation for musical excellence was further bolstered in 1996 when it received a grant from the Chrysler Corporation Fund to produce a classical CD, allowing the orchestra's work to be appreciated beyond live performances. Subsequent directors, including Glenn Klassen (2002-2009) and Clark Suttle (2010 onwards), continued to uphold the orchestra's tradition of excellence. In 2014, Zeljko Bill Milicevic took over as music director and conductor, raising the RSO's performance standards to new heights. The orchestra's 2016 season, marked by innovative arrangements and a free concert in the Rochester Municipal Park band-shell, exemplified the high-caliber talent that the RSO brings to the community. The RSO not only offers subscription concerts featuring renowned guest artists and soloists but also engages in educational and outreach initiatives, such as the annual Young Artist Competition since 1982. This program encourages young musicians to showcase their talents, competing for a cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the orchestra. As a cornerstone of the local arts scene, the RSO contributes significantly to making the greater Rochester area a more vibrant place to live, work, and visit. The orchestra's success over the past 58 years can be attributed to the dedication of its conductors, musicians, and board members, as well as the unwavering support from its audiences and sponsors. The Rochester Symphony Orchestra remains a testament to the shared vision of excellence and the communal spirit of its supporters.
