Established in 2008 by a group of visionary founders—Chris Cheever, Asia Ciaravino, Anthony Ciaravino, Diane Malone, Rick Malone, Terri Peña Ross, and Allan S. Ross—the theatre has since become a beacon of the performing arts community in the region. The Classic Theatre is dedicated to producing high-quality theatrical productions that reflect its core values of excellence, relevance, diversity, entertainment, and transformation. The theatre's mission is to create exceptional theatre that resonates with the diverse population of San Antonio, fostering a vibrant city enriched with arts and culture that connect communities. Its vision extends to seeing San Antonio as a city where the diversity of arts and culture thrives, creating connections across different communities. With a history of over a decade, The Classic Theatre has made significant strides in increasing the representation of women both on stage and in staff positions. The theatre is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, actively working to create vibrant and connected communities through the production of classic works and community events. These productions are recognized as classic not only for their relevance at the time of their creation but also for their continued significance today and in the future. The Classic Theatre's professional relationship with The Actor’s Equity Association allows it to offer Special Appearance contracts to AEA members, ensuring high standards of performance and production. Each year, the theatre presents five main stage shows and a Second Series of smaller productions, collaborating with both local and national artists. This dedication to the arts has earned the theatre over 70 Alamo Theatre Arts Council (ATAC) Awards, reflecting its impact on the local theatre scene. The theatre's commitment to the community is further demonstrated through its active living commitments, which include fostering an environment of acceptance and appreciation for diversity, cultivating a caring organizational culture, and continuously assessing and engaging underrepresented communities. The Classic Theatre ensures transparency and accountability through public sharing of these commitments and ongoing leadership activities. The Classic Theatre is led by Producing Artistic Director J. Robert "Jimmy" Moore and Managing Director Ruben Jauregui, Jr., along with a dedicated team including Production Manager Jackie Perez, Box Office Manager Florence Bunten, and Office Administrator Ward LeHardy. The theatre's governance structure includes a Board of Trustees, an Advisory Board, and a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Committee, all of whom play vital roles in guiding the organization's direction and upholding its values.
