Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra

Scottsdale, AZ, United States

The Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra (SSO) is a professional-level ensemble based in Scottsdale, Arizona, dedicated to delivering high-quality orchestral performances that serve to uplift, inspire, and culturally enrich the local community. Founded with the intention of providing both local musicians and audiences with the experience of live concert events, the SSO has quickly established itself as a source of affordable and professional classical music. The orchestra is currently engaged in a worldwide search for a Music Director, with the 2023-2024 season featuring a series of finalist candidates acting as guest conductors for each concert. The permanent Music Director is expected to be appointed for the 2024-2025 season. In its inaugural season, the orchestra has already showcased the talents of distinguished guest conductors such as John Massaro and Livia Gho, both of whom have brought their unique experiences and backgrounds to the podium. John Massaro, known for his work with the Phoenix Opera and international conducting engagements, has a rich history in the field, including collaborations with Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Mehta. Livia Gho, hailing from Singapore and with a background that bridges Eastern and Western musical traditions, brings her expertise from her work with various ensembles and as a recognized conductor and composer. The SSO's performances are held at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in the Virginia G. Piper Theater, a venue celebrated for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere. The debut performance, themed "New Beginnings," included classical masterpieces by Mozart, Grieg, Elgar, and Beethoven, reflecting the orchestra's commitment to presenting familiar and beloved works to the community. The SSO is governed by a board of directors comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, including entrepreneurs, educators, and professional musicians, all united by their passion for music and community service. The board includes Denise Wilson as Board Chair, Nancy Sowers as Vice Chair, Heather Van Beek as Secretary, and several Directors at Large, such as Donald Harvey, Dr. Leah J. Hodge, Petra Fromme, Barbara Moss, and Charlie Bullen. As a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, the SSO relies on the support of the community and welcomes donations, which are tax-deductible. The orchestra also provides a platform for local musicians to join and contribute to the ensemble's growth and success. The SSO maintains a presence in Scottsdale, with its office located at 20715 N Pima Road, and can be contacted for further information or support through its website or by phone. The orchestra's commitment to musical excellence and community engagement positions it as an important cultural asset in the region, poised to continue its mission of bringing symphonic music to the forefront of the local arts scene.
