An Evening at Hogwarts: Music by Candlelight

Fans will run to the symphony hall to hear some of the most iconic hits of the 90s and early 2000s boy band craze with A Night of Symphonic Boy Bands. 

The show includes members from three internationally adored boy bands that are sure to pack the house: Chris Kirkpatrick (*NSYNC), Jeff Timmons (98 Degrees), and Erik-Michael Estrada (OTown).

One of the most influential and innovative symphonies ever written, the “Eroica” was originally intended to be dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, but Beethoven changed his mind after Napoleon crowned himself emperor in 1804. He felt Napoleon had betrayed his ideals of freedom and equality, and he scratched out his name from the title page of the score. The evening will start with works by American composer and pianist Florence Price—the first African-American woman to have a symphony performed by a major orchestra. Brazilian guitarist Fabio Zanon will take the soloist podium for Villa-Lobos’ Guitar concerto.

You will want to be present as we highlight one of our own—principal horn, Richard Britsch—who will take the limelight for Glière’s Horn Concerto with YOUR Grand Rapids Symphony. The program opens with Grażyna Bacewicz's Overture—an energizing work that was written in 1943, during World War II. Its bold melodies, driving rhythms, and expressive orchestration evoke hope and resilience in the face of adversity. After the death of his father, T’Challa now prepares to be crowned the new king of Wakanda. However, T’Challa finds that his position is now being challenged by the appearance of an old enemy named Killmonger, which puts both Wakanda and the world at risk. Teaming with the Dora Milaje, his little sister Shuri, and his CIA ally Everett K. Ross, T’Challa must harness the powers of the Black Panther to fight his enemy and save Wakanda from destruction.

Celebrate the holiday season with the University of Michigan Health - West Holiday Pops, a cherished Grand Rapids tradition that promises to enchant the whole family. Under the baton of conductor Bob Bernhardt, with the captivating Tony DeSare on piano and vocals, this festive concert will feature the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus directed by Pearl Shangkuan, and the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus co-directed by Sean & Leah Ivory.
