The Frauenthal Center is a historic cultural venue located in Muskegon, Michigan, known for its dynamic role in community enrichment and its contribution to the region's economic vitality. Originally named the Michigan Theater, the center was built in 1929 by local movie mogul Paul Shlossman, a charismatic figure recognized by his camel-hair coat and tipped hat. The theater was designed by architect C. Howard Crane, who was commissioned by the Schlossman Company between 1915 and 1917 to design three of Muskegon's great theaters: the Rialto, Majestic, and Regent theaters. The Michigan Theater was constructed to showcase "100% all talking motion pictures," with the grand opening taking place on September 16, 1930. The community celebrated its opening with great fanfare, as the theater was praised for its beauty and grace, and an advertisement in the Muskegon Chronicle proclaimed it the best in Michigan, second to none in the United States for a town of Muskegon's size. The theater's architectural style is Moorish or Spanish Renaissance, featuring gold accents, cherubs, griffins, ornamental light fixtures, rich velour coverings, and a ceiling with a large acoustic dome. However, in the 1950s, the theater's interior was painted over with beige, reflecting the tastes of the time. Despite this, it continued to operate as a movie house until the late 1960s when the Schlossman Company met its demise. In the early 1970s, the Michigan Theater faced potential demolition but was saved by the efforts of a citizen's group and the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, which had received a substantial gift from industrialist A. Harold Frauenthal. The foundation purchased the entire block, including the theater, and began the work of establishing the Frauenthal Center. Over the years, the center has undergone significant renovations and expansions, including the transformation of an old furniture space into the Hilt Building, which now houses the Beardsley Theater, art gallery, meeting rooms, ballrooms, dressing rooms, and reception areas. In 1998, a major renovation restored the theater's original Spanish castle vision and included technological upgrades, accessibility improvements, and the construction of a new two-level lobby. In 2021, the Frauenthal Theater underwent further renovations to address structural needs and enhance the patron experience. The campaign raised $6.3 million, allowing for the replacement of windows, an upgraded HVAC system, reinforced fire escapes, a renovated marquee, and new sidewalks with a snow melting system. Future improvements planned for the summer of 2023 include updated sound and video systems, lighting equipment, and stage replacement. The Frauenthal Center continues to serve as Muskegon's premier destination for entertainment, event hosting, and art exhibits, reflecting the community's spirit and history. The Community Foundation for Muskegon County remains committed to the center's ongoing success, ensuring that it remains a vital part of the community's cultural landscape.
