Adrian, MI, United States
The Croswell Opera House, established in 1866, stands as Michigan's oldest theater and one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the United States. With a rich history that spans over 150 years, the Croswell has become an integral part of Adrian's cultural heritage, providing a venue that has been central to the community's history. Named after Charles M. Croswell, the 17th governor of Michigan and an Adrian resident, the theater has played host to a variety of notable figures and events. In the 19th century, it welcomed illustrious actors such as Edwin Booth, Maude Adams, Otis Skinner, and Mrs. Patrick Campbell. The famed bandmaster John Philip Sousa graced its stage, as did political luminaries like Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. Transitioning in the 20th century, the Croswell served as a movie theater for approximately 50 years, creating lasting memories and emotional ties within the community. However, by 1967, the future of the Croswell was uncertain as declining movie audiences and a deteriorating structure threatened its survival. A dedicated group of citizens recognized the theater's value and potential, leading to the purchase and revival of the Croswell as a live theater venue, marking the beginning of its current era. Today, the Croswell Opera House boasts a beautifully restored auditorium, reminiscent of its movie-palace grandeur, seating around 640 patrons. Each Broadway season, from spring to December, features six to eight full-scale musicals. The Special Event Season, during the winter months, offers a variety of concerts, at least one non-musical play, and an all-area high school musical that attracts talent from across southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. The Croswell's mission is to enrich the community as a leading cultural icon while preserving its diverse heritage. The Croswell Opera House and Fine Arts Association, along with its employees, are dedicated to promoting and perpetuating the arts. They offer professional growth opportunities for artists within the historic building and encourage cultural participation among all ages. Their vision is to engage the community, connect people, and maintain financial viability and self-sustainability. The Croswell's values include providing a safe and inspiring environment for personal growth, promoting teamwork, and fostering respect and collaboration. Their commitment is to present art that patrons will enjoy and support, ensuring a lasting legacy for generations to come.
