The Alpena Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a distinguished musical ensemble that has been a significant part of the cultural landscape of Alpena, Michigan, since its establishment in the spring of 2004. The orchestra's inception was driven by the aspirations of local musicians to resurrect the legacy of the former Alpena Civic Orchestra, which had been inactive since the late 1980s. The ASO's debut performance took place on June 25, 2004, under the baton of Dr. Diane Float, and was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, drawing a standing-room-only audience of 250 at the Alpena Civic Center. This event marked the commencement of a new chapter for string music in the region. The ASO operates on a seasonal basis, beginning in the fall and extending through the subsequent summer. Its programming typically comprises three full orchestral concerts alongside two or three chamber ensemble performances. The orchestra is under the leadership of maestro Jim VanEizenga, with Dr. Eric Lawson serving as the Concertmaster. In 2013, the ASO expanded its educational outreach by establishing the Alpena String School. The school's mission is to provide instruction and development opportunities for both young students and adults interested in learning to play string instruments, with Dr. Eric Lawson at the helm of the educational initiative. The ASO is committed to its primary goal of bringing the splendor of classical music to the people of Alpena and its neighboring communities. It offers a platform for musicians of various skill levels, including professionals, amateurs, and students, to engage with orchestral repertoire, perform in concerts, and participate in a variety of educational activities. Concerts hosted by the ASO are ticketed events, with three main concerts each season. Additionally, the orchestra accepts donations at its smaller ensemble concerts. Ticket prices are set at $15.00 for adults, while students are granted free admission. The ASO also conducts a direct-mail fundraising campaign annually and receives some grant funding to support its financial needs. In order to provide a comprehensive symphonic experience, the orchestra occasionally invites guest musicians from outside the area and compensates them minimally for travel expenses. The organization operates without salaried staff, ensuring that all funds are allocated towards the purchase of music, instruments, rehearsal spaces, and concert venue fees. The Alpena Symphony Orchestra is a Michigan non-profit corporation and has been recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code. The ASO continues to enrich the cultural fabric of Alpena through its dedication to music and education.
