Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra

Onekama, United States

The Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra (BASO) is a distinguished community orchestra that has been making music in Benzie County and the surrounding areas of Northwest Michigan since its inception in 1980. Founded by Julia Kurtyka, a professional violinist and string teacher within the Frankfort Public Schools, BASO has provided a valuable platform for local community musicians to rehearse, learn, and perform, thereby fostering a deep appreciation for music in the region. The orchestra primarily operates during the summer and early fall seasons, offering a series of performances that showcase the talents of its members and the works of various composers. Over the years, the Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra has been under the leadership of several prominent musicians and educators. Don Smith served as the conductor from 1985 to 1999, followed by Dorothy Kunkel from 1999 to 2007. John Beery took the baton from 2008 to 2014, and since 2015, Tom Riccobono has been leading the orchestra as its conductor and musical advisor. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, BASO relies on the generosity of donations and grants to continue serving the community through its musical mission. The organization encourages those interested in supporting its endeavors to contact them for more information. The governance and operational aspects of the Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra are overseen by a dedicated staff and board of directors. The staff includes Autumn Kirby as the Music Librarian, Theresa Kelley as the Operations Manager, and Heather Deegan as the Historian. The board of directors is composed of individuals committed to the orchestra's success, with Jim Bekkering serving as the President and Chair, Laura Hood as the Vice President, Marcia Korwin as the Secretary, and Ann Kullenberg as the Treasurer. Other notable board members include Elizabeth Blondia, Malcolm Brannen, Chris Hintz (also the Website Coordinator and Writer), Candace Wiebener (the Concertmaster and Adjunct Member), and Nancy Williamson (Adjunct Member). The Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra has established itself as a cultural cornerstone in the community, with a history of passionate involvement and dedication to the arts. Its continued commitment to musical excellence is evident in the quality of its performances and the nurturing environment it provides for musicians and music lovers alike.
