The theatre has also played an active role in the revitalization of its neighborhood in Detroit. === Mission and History === The Detroit Repertory Theatre's mission is to produce the highest quality professional theatre while promoting democratization of the arts and combating racism. The theatre's belief is that the sense of community is stronger than the forces that divide, and it has consistently worked to preserve unity while also celebrating diversity. The theatre's goal is to produce exceptional professional theatre that serves as a catalyst for cultural, social, and artistic transformation within the city of Detroit, the surrounding region, and the state of Michigan. === Productions and Facilities === The Detroit Repertory Theatre is the oldest alternative professional theatre in Michigan. It produces four major productions each year, with each running for approximately eight weeks and performed six times per week. The theatre boasts 180 or more performances annually, with recent seasons totaling more than 60,000 admissions. The intimate venue seats 194 patrons and operates under an Actors' Equity Association Small Professional Theatre contract. In addition to its main theatre, the Repertory owns two auxiliary buildings that house a scene shop, costume shop, design and photographic studios, a print shop, and space for rehearsals and instruction. === Community Involvement and Outreach === Throughout its history, the Detroit Repertory Theatre has been deeply committed to community engagement and outreach. Programs such as the Actors Workshop, Cultural Fellows, and New Playwrights Program demonstrate the theatre's dedication to fostering artistic growth and cultural enrichment. The Gilda Snowden Lobby Gallery further exemplifies the theatre's commitment to serving as a cultural hub in the community. === Achievements and Recognition === The theatre has been acknowledged for its extraordinary achievements in the arts, including receiving the CCAM Governor's award in 1986.
