Today, Clara Schumann and her music are largely overshadowed by the work of her husband, Robert. But during the sixteen years that the two were married (1840-1856), things were quite different. Indeed, it was Clara – a famous piano virtuoso – who was the public face of this artistic couple. And it was largely thanks to her advocacy, both during Robert’s lifetime and for decades after it, that his music entered the standard repertoire.

The critically-acclaimed Calder Quartet returns to The Da Camera Society with a program comprising two masterworks of the chamber music repertoire:

Join us in the Pompeian Room of the Doheny Mansion as two of the world’s finest musicians embark on a rare performance of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano. Cellist Andrew Shulman, whose remarkable career has included first chair positions with the London Philharmonia Orchestra and the LA Phil, is a founding member of the New Hollywood String Quartet and a professor of cello performance at USC. Pianist Fabio Bidini has performed and recorded with the world’s premiere orchestras and ensembles and is currently endowed chair at the Colburn Conservatory of Music. He will accompany Prof. Shulman on The Da Camera Society’s recently-restored Pleyel piano.

Revel in the technical mastery and infectious energy of guitarists João Luiz and Douglas Lora in one of LA’s finest, most intimate concert halls. Among the most accomplished guitar ensembles of their generation, Brasil Guitar Duo specialize in the art music of South America, including the work of Brouwer, Gismonti, and Piazzolla. Luiz is the head of Guitar Studies at Stony Brook University and Director of Chamber Music at CUNY-Hunter College. Lora has recently replaced Scott Tennant as the newest member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

The New Hollywood String Quartet performs Schubert’s transcendental String Quintet in the 50-seat Parlor Room of the Stimson House. A staple of the LA music scene, the NHSQ brings together four of the finest instrumentalists in Southern California. They will be joined by cellist Clive Greensmith (formerly of the Tokyo String Quartet) in their performance of one of Schubert’s most sublime creations.
