Brown University professor, Chapman Presidential Fellow, and saxophonist Dr. Stephon Alexander leads a group of world-class musicians and cutting-edge physicists who bring to vivid life his best-selling book, The Jazz of Physics. Part concert and part scientific panel, this brilliant event reveals the true interconnectivity of STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math – and how STEAM drives education and the universe. These unique lineages mixed with their diverse contemporary styles - roots-reggae, beats, folk & spoken-word, establish a contemporary musical dialogue between cultures, drawing on their ancestral lineage to confront contemporary issues with a hope driven vision of the future. Husband-and-wife team Herb Alpert and Lani Hall are a musical power couple for the ages, with 11 Grammy Awards and countless chart-topping hits between them. Alpert is the legendary trumpeter of Tijuana Brass fame, who provided an upbeat soundtrack to the ‘60s with such hits as “The Lonely Bull,” “A Taste of Honey,” “Tijuana Taxi” and “This Guy’s In Love With You.” He’s taken his career in extraordinary new directions with his current agile, melodious jazz-pop trio. Hall, the unforgettable voice of the original Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66, has recorded 22 albums in three different languages. Their musical offerings include tunes from the American songbook, jazzy sets sprinkled with Brazilian rhythms, a Tijuana Brass medley and much more.

Dancer, choreographer, director and dance educator Camille A. Brown is the founder and artistic director of Camille A. Brown & Dancers, and has choreographed commissioned pieces for dance companies, Broadway shows and universities throughout the United States. Brown started her career as a dancer in Ronald K. Brown’s Evidence, A Dance Company, and has been a guest artist with Rennie Harris’s Puremovement, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. She has choreographed major Broadway shows such as Choir Boy, Once on This Island and the production of Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert! that aired on NBC.

In The Look of Love, Mark Morris and his dancers present a wistful and heartfelt homage to the chart-topping songs of the late Burt Bacharach and his longtime lyricist Hal David. This evening-length work features original choreography by Morris and new musical arrangements by Ethan Iverson, with Broadway star Marcy Harriell on lead vocals. Bacharach’s marvelous music “calls out for dancing,” says Morris. You’ll hear new arrangements of classic hits, performed live by the Mark Morris Dance Group’s Music Ensemble, from “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Walk On By” to “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” Morris, a hugely influential figure in the world of dance, founded his Mark Morris Dance Group in 1980 and remains its artistic director. His works are universally celebrated for their wit, creativity, musicality, and emotional depth.

As a child, Anoushka studied the sitar with her father, Pandit Ravi Shankar, one of the world’s best known North Indian classical musicians. Eventually, she would merge the meditative, introspective qualities of Indian classical music with a teenage love for electronic music and the Goan psychedelic trance scene, creating a sound “one foot in the past and one in the present.”

LATINXoxo is Migguel Anggelo's nonconforming and self-accepting rallying cry: a break from “Latin Lover” clichés and his Venezuelan father's gendered expectations. A Pulitzer Prize finalist, Linda Villarosa’s “Under the Skin” reveals the structural and social inequities in the American healthcare system that lead to higher rates of illness and shorter lifespans among Black individuals, compared to their white counterparts. In the devastating book, Villarosa explains how anti-Black beliefs have influenced medical research and practice, leading to worse treatment and outcomes for Black patients, who are also more likely to suffer from the stressors of environmental racism and communities neglected by the government. With tragic stories and shocking evidence, “Under the Skin” is another invaluable contribution from Villarosa, an award-winning writer at New York Times Magazine and a contributor to the 1619 Project.

In Mexico, Christmas is not just a single day but a whole season of Christmas-related celebrations! Today, the Christmas traditions in Mexico vary from region to region and are a blend of indigenous culture, Spanish heritage, and many other influences. Focusing on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), this spectacular concert features a dazzling cast of musicians and dancers presenting traditions, costumes, and customs that people in Mexico celebrate during the festive season.

Known around the world for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the TV and film series Star Trek, actor, activist, and social media sensation George Takei has since become a prominent voice for immigrant and LGBTQIA+ rights, particularly in his poignant recollections of his childhood spent behind the barbed-wire enclosures of Japanese-American internment camps during WWII.

Using poetry, music, movement, and visuals, The Just and the Blind illuminates the underheard experiences of incarcerated youth and the realities their families face. Spoken word artist and activist Marc Bamuthi Joseph joins with composer/violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain and street dance phenomenon Drew Dollaz to explore themes of racial profiling, sentencing and the prison-industrial complex from the perspective of fathers of Black and Brown sons.

Classically-trained composer/pianist JooWan Kim leads Ensemble Mik Nawooj in the creation of Meta Music by sampling principles of both hip-hop and classical. Merging genres with a resident MC, a lyric soprano, woodwinds, French horn, string, piano, and drums, Ensemble Mik Nawooj creates rigorous, nuanced, and accessible music that challenges the aesthetics of Western European concert music in a way that is fast-paced, engaging, and fun.

Visually and sonically striking, DakhaBrakha has long served as protective Ukrainian music and cultural ambassadors. Mixing their traditional homeland melodies with jazz, hip-hop, trance, dance, and trans-national instrumentation, this Kyiv folk punk quartet powerfully raises awareness with their bright and unforgettable "ethno chaos” sound and avant garde stage show.

Back by popular demand! Violist Wil B and violinist Kev Marcus met in high school orchestra, studying classical composers in the morning and listening to contemporary rhythms in the afternoon. Now in their 15th year as the professional duo Black Violin, they are busting genres and fusing musical traditions together. Black Violin challenges conventions and expectations through their distinctive multi-genre sound called “classical boom.”

Hailed as a "truly exceptional tenor" by the National Review, Ben Bliss has established himself as one of the most exciting performers on some of today’s biggest operatic stages, including The Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and two debuts at the Opéra national de Paris. He has been cited as "an exemplar of the Mozartean tenor" for his "purity of tone, vocal control and artistic sensitivity" (Opera Warhorses). Ben is a recipient of the Metropolitan Opera's prestigious Beverly Sills Award, and his numerous other accolades include the 2016 Martin E. Segal Award at Lincoln Center, the Mozart and Plácido Domingo awards at the 2015 Francisco Viñas International Competition, first prize at the 2014 Gerda Lissner and Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation competitions, and the 2013 Operalia Don Plácido Domingo Sr. Zarzuela Prize.

From French choreographer Hervé Koubi, Sol Invictus is a powerful exploration of luminosity and the bonds that unite us. Performed by Compagnie Hervé Koubi, an ensemble celebrated for its breathtaking virtuosity and refined, expressive clarity, Sol Invictus is a visually stunning and deeply human work that illuminates the invisible threads connecting us to one another. Named after the “invincible sun” deity, the work upholds love as the guarantor of peace, that despite fracture, communion emerges as humanity’s saving grace. The music score includes a composition by Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson, with excerpts by Steve Reich and digital composer Maxime Bodson. “I want to talk about light, solidarity, and those bonds that unite us,” says Koubi. “Here, the sun and the dance will emerge victorious.”

Aquila Theatre brings a bold and compelling new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless tale The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Written in 1885 and inspired by a strange and feverish dream, Stevenson created this Gothic horror to expose the treacherous and terrifying nature of a fractured self. Unable to quell his darkest desires, Dr. Henry Jekyll becomes convinced he can separate the good and evil within. Using science, he attempts to sever his two identities, unleashing a terrifying double life through the creation of Edward Hyde. What begins as a daring experiment spirals into a desperate struggle between the two identities as each battles for control and survival. Which side will win? Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Lee Rocker made his mark singing, playing, standing on, spinning, and rocking his giant upright bass as a founding member (along with Brian Setzer and Slim Jim Phantom), of the Grammy-nominated music group The Stray Cats, who sold over 10 million albums and garnered 23 gold and platinum certified records worldwide. He has since been named “Greatest Of All Time” in Bass Player Magazine’s 2022 listing of the top 100 bassists ever.
