Our Fall Junior Actors Ensemble (grades 3–6) presents the classic animated TV special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jr. as Act One. Act Two features our Middle School Actors Ensemble (grades 6–9) in A Christmas Carol Project – a collection of scenes and songs from various adaptations of the classic Dickens story. Antipholus and his servant, Dromio, travel in search of a long-lost family member, only to get mixed up in a madcap race against the clock, love-at-first-double-take, run-ins with local law enforcement, and double trouble—times two. Christina Anderson’s translation maintains all we love about Shakespeare’s language even as it updates the jokes and wordplay, breathing new life into the double (and triple) entendres. A small theater troupe in the town of Whynot has gathered to put up their director’s new version of A Christmas Carol. From the first rehearsal to opening night, we follow these sometimes-reluctant comrades on their quest to put on a great show with too little time and money but no shortage of opinions. An ingenious set and costume design by Tony Award winner David Zinn (A.C.T.’s The Wizard of Oz) transports us behind the curtain as our ragtag cast boldly tackles prop mishaps and dance blunders, collaborating against all odds in hopes of a holiday miracle: real change. With festive music, magical ghosts, an effervescent cast of kids, and ample hijinks, this fresh telling amplifies Dickens’s moving and evergreen call for true generosity all through the year.

Bay Area favorite KJ Sanchez reimagines and directs Noël Coward’s hysterical classic tale of the tempestuous dance that is marriage. Reset to 1930s Argentina and featuring sensual tango dancing, Coward’s iconic, wry comedy sings with spiky repartee. When an explosive divorced couple and their new spouses inadvertently honeymoon in adjacent rooms at the same hotel, combustible chemistry reignites, strong passions and stronger personalities take over, and mayhem ensues. Brace yourself and prepare to laugh at what director Sanchez calls a “saucy, brassy, and rude” battle of equals that’s “as much about fighting as it is making love.”

On a cold September morning in 1844, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life. He is soon joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins with a small store in Alabama. One hundred and sixty-three years later, the firm they establish—Lehman Brothers—spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy and triggers the largest financial crisis in history. Utilizing the multi-storied, multi-roomed Strand Theater as non-traditional theater space, audiences will be broken up into four groups that independently tour Fefu’s home. Stories and histories come into play as you happen across conversations as Fefu’s bohemian and raucous cohorts gossip, question, flirt, provoke, and ultimately reveal (or hide?) the universal understandings between women. As muscular and searing in her deliberate use of language as Albee and Miller at their best; as acidic as Clare Boothe Luce’s iconic play The Women; and patron saint to blockbuster hits like Sleep No More—Fornés’s Fefu and Her Friends is an invitation to a theatrical experience like none other.

The Young Conservatory Middle School Actors Ensemble presents an abridged version of Tennessee Williams's classic play, The Glass Menagerie. We follow the trials and tribulations of the Wingfield family as the matriarch, Amanda, desperately tries to carve out a future for her children—one at odds with the changing world around them. The young cast of The Glass Menagerie explores the conflict between personal dreams and familial duties, made more resonant as they take their first steps towards shaping their futures and creating the world they want to see.

Launching its American tour at the A.C.T.'s Geary Theater, Freestyle Love Supreme pays homage to John Coltrane's improvisational musical style as it takes audiences on a freestyle, never-before-seen-and-never-to-be-seen-again hip-hop comedy ride. Hailed as “sophisticated and haphazard, hilarious and serious” by Rolling Stone, no two shows will be alike, as performers—and special guest artists—take suggestions from the audience and spin them into instantaneous riffs and full-length musical numbers. Bay Area audiences will be the very first to see this slam-dunk hit, conceived over 15 years ago and as fresh as today’s Twitter feed.

Twelfth Night tells the story of Viola, a young heroine who washes up on the shores of Illyria, disguises herself as a man, is sent to court a countess and falls hard for a Duke. As she navigates this strange and wonderful new land, she finds her true self and true love in the process.

This year's theme, REVOLUTION IS JUST THE BEGINNING, is in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot—a pivotal moment in transgender history that helped shape San Francisco and movements for liberation around the world. This powerful and uplifting evening of music, spoken word, and projections features Sapphira Cristál, Katherine Goforth, and Nina Jones, with host Afrika America and pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi.

heater legend Emma Rice (A.C.T.’s Brief Encounter, Berkeley Rep’s The Wild Bride) returns to the Bay Area with her inventive take on the Alfred Hitchcock 1959 classic North by Northwest in a production hailed as “an undoubted triumph” (WhatsOnStage). This thrilling tale of mistaken identity sees us fleeing from a cornfield in the middle of nowhere to the sheer face of Mount Rushmore as Rice transforms this iconic film into a riotously funny high-speed theatrical ride.

e transported to San Francisco’s Fillmore District—beginning in the present day, where the echoes of a once-thriving Black neighborhood still shape the streets. From there, Every Saturday Night pulls audiences back into the 1950s, the vibrant “Harlem of the West,” when the Fillmore pulsed with jazz, community, and possibility.

Following two Black boys—one in each era—the musical explores home, belonging, and resilience, revealing how the Fillmore’s past and present are connected by displacement, gentrification, and the enduring fight to stay rooted in the community.

h, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

In a one-stoplight town in Georgia, in a high school AP English class, five young women begin questioning the stories and the heroes they’ve been taught to believe in, against a soundtrack of pop music and fury. As their class dissects a canonical work of literature, the parallels between the play and their own lives become uncomfortably real, and they begin to re-examine who we deem heroic, who we call a villain, and who gets burned in the process.

Based on the beloved 1976 Paramount Pictures film written by Bill Lancaster, this new musical follows a washed-up baseball player who takes a job coaching a ragtag team of Little League misfits, including his ex-stepdaughter. Through practice, persistence, and some good luck, they just may find victory in surprising places. Remember: they're not losers. They're athletically-challenged adolescents with developing coordination readiness. 

The Bad News Bears: A Musical

hen a group of millennial classmates meet to pregame for their twentieth high school reunion, everyone is nervous for the night ahead. As alcohol and weed help the self-declared “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group” let their guards down, they begin to reminisce and reveal how their lives have unfolded since graduation. Did their friendships stand the test of time? Why do they remember certain moments from their past differently? From Pulitzer Prize–winning and two-time Tony Award–winning playwright Branden Jacob-Jenkins (Gloria) comes a new profound tragicomedy about the reunion that awaits us all.

his hilariously chaotic new play follows five generations of Assyrian women attempting to reclaim their story as it’s being narrated by some British guy (said British guy being played with sharp-elbowed satire by playwright Atra Asdou). Marching through time and space, this journey from the Ottoman Empire to modern-day USA portrays a gritty reality that’s playfully witty, filled with history, family, and dysfunction—it’s the zaniest history of the Middle East you ever did see!
