== Orchestra Nova LA == === History === Orchestra Nova LA, a prominent symphonic ensemble based in Los Angeles, California, traces its origins to the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra, which was established in 1953. The founding members were a group of physicians and other medical professionals who initiated the orchestra with the aim of supporting medical charities. Over the years, the orchestra has had the privilege of performing with numerous distinguished soloists and conductors, experiencing significant growth in both its musical prowess and membership size. As the landscape of medicine evolved, so did the composition of the orchestra's membership. For a considerable period, the informal requirement for joining was simply having visited a doctor at least once. In 2023, with the intent of steering the ensemble in a new direction, Orchestra Nova LA was officially formed, building on the legacy of its predecessor but with a broader vision. === Mission === Orchestra Nova LA is dedicated to fostering a deep connection between its audience and the transformative power of music. The organization's mission encompasses the provision of high-quality, accessible concert experiences, the encouragement of volunteer musicians—including young and emerging artists—in their musical endeavors, and the promotion of artistic development among its members. === Music Director === Ivan Shulman, an accomplished conductor with a rich background in music education, performance, and clinical expertise, serves as the inaugural conductor and Music Director of Orchestra Nova LA. A native of New York, Shulman was mentored by his father, Harry Shulman, a renowned oboist who performed with the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini. Shulman's formative years included attendance at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico and musical studies in Marlboro and Aspen. His academic pursuits led him to the University of Pittsburgh for medical school, followed by a diverse surgical residency and service in the US Public Health Service. Despite his medical career, Shulman maintained a close relationship with music, performing with various ensembles upon his move to Los Angeles. === Leadership === The governance of Orchestra Nova LA is overseen by a dedicated board of directors, comprising Myles Lee (President), Joseph Braun (Vice President), Andrew Hasel (Treasurer), Ken Alexander (Secretary), and board members Timothy Chan, Michelle Marinello, Jerry Hornof, Rebecca Rodman, and Karen Scharre, along with Music Director Ivan Shulman. === Artist of the Month === Orchestra Nova LA celebrates its members' contributions, highlighting individuals such as Xenos Mason, a horn player and neurologist, who has been with the orchestra for four years. Mason is recognized for his leadership within the brass section and his intellectual pursuits outside of music. Orchestra Nova LA continues to enrich the cultural tapestry of Los Angeles through its performances and community engagement, honoring its history while embracing the future of orchestral music.
