Don Giovanni, with the help of his servant Leporello, attempts to seduce Donna Anna, for which he kills her outraged father, "The Commander." He then flees from the young lady's fiancé, Don Ottavio, who pursues him for vengeance. He briefly encounters a former lover, Donna Elvira, whom he evades, leaving his servant to provide explanations.

While he continues to escape, he finds himself in the middle of a village wedding, where he seduces the young bride, Zerlina, leading her to the bedroom. Zerlina manages to escape, screaming, and Don Giovanni is cornered by his enemies but manages to escape again.

Don Giovanni exchanges clothing with Leporello to elude Donna Elvira once more and arrange a meeting with his maid. However, when Donna Elvira sees Leporello, believing him to be Don Giovanni, she throws herself into his arms.

Don Giovanni confronts the statue of Donna Anna's father and invites him to dinner. To his surprise and his assistant's, The Commander appears at the table with a great commotion. After attempting to secure Don Giovanni's repentance, he drags him into the depths.
