AICMF’s 24th season comes to an exciting end with our annual Christopher Rex String Seminar, bringing together two rising star young quartets – our Beth Newdome Fellows – with the distinguished American String Quartet for a week of coachings, community outreach activities, and public concerts.

Internationally recognized as one of the world's finest quartets, the American String Quartet has spent decades honing the luxurious sound for which it is famous. The Quartet celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2019, and, in its years of touring, has performed in all fifty states and has appeared in the most important concert halls worldwide. The group’s presentations of the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Bartók, and Mozart have won widespread critical acclaim, and their MusicMasters Complete Mozart String Quartets, performed on a matched quartet set of instruments by Stradivarius, are widely considered to have set the standard for this repertoire.

MSM Artists in Residence: American String Quartet

Known for their luxurious sound, the internationally acclaimed American String Quartet continues to champion the music world with their performances of both traditional and groundbreaking repertoire. Having performed in all fifty states and in the most important concert halls worldwide, we are elated to invite this fearless and adventurous quartet to Madeline Island Chamber Music. Since its inception more than 45 years ago, the quartet continues as the Resident Quartet of the Aspen Music Festival since 1974, and Manhattan School of Music since 1985, while premiering and performing new music around the world.

Master Class: American String Quartet

Also returning to Cheboygan will be the American String Quartet who performed here in 2021. The American String Quartet has long been one of America’s leading string quartets. They are celebrating their 50th year as an ensemble. The American String Quartet will present a program including Beethoven’s last quartet, his opus 135, sometimes referred to as “It must be,” referring to a section of the middle movement that seems to ask the question and answer it, “Must it be?” Also on the program is Vivian Fung’s “Pizzicato for String Quartet”, Pulitzer-Prize winning contemporary composer, Caroline Shaw’s “Blueprint,” and finally ending with Ravel’s Quartet in F major.
