Convergence Ballet is a non-profit ballet company based in Phoenix, Arizona, known for its unique summer performances and diverse ensemble of dancers. The company was founded by artistic director Jennifer Cafarella, who sought to create a ballet company that operated during the off-season when many dancers are typically without work. Convergence Ballet held its inaugural show, "Debut," at Mesa's Arts Center on August 28th, 2010, to a full house of enthusiastic attendees, including friends, family, and prominent figures from the dance community. The company's formation was driven by Cafarella's vision to provide employment opportunities for dancers during the summer months, a time when most companies are not active. Many of the dancers, who originate from the Phoenix area, return home during this period to visit family. Recognizing this, Cafarella personally invited dancers to join the new venture, recruiting talent from dance studios and open company classes. Convergence Ballet distinguishes itself by bringing together a compilation of dancers from various backgrounds, including classical ballet, modern dance, and musical theatre. This eclectic mix contributes to the company's unique character and innovative performances. Juliana Fisher, one of the dancers, was approached by Cafarella during an open class at Ballet Arizona and joined the group, appreciating the diversity of the ensemble. Nicole Olson, a choreographer and dancer with Convergence Ballet, was drawn to the company through her friendship with Cafarella and expressed a desire to continue with the company in future seasons. She found the concept of a pick-up company during the summer intriguing and was curious to see how it would evolve. As the artistic director, Cafarella was responsible for selecting the choreographers who would collaborate on the summer show. She emphasizes the importance of surrounding herself with talented individuals from whom she can learn. Through her leadership, Cafarella acknowledges the learning curve involved in establishing the company, noting that she made numerous mistakes but also gained valuable lessons. Beyond providing performance opportunities for dancers, Convergence Ballet also engages in community outreach. The company has partnered with Phoenix Children's Hospital, with a portion of the ticket proceeds from their shows being donated to the hospital. Approximately $500 was contributed from their first performance. Convergence Ballet plans to continue its involvement with the hospital through additional events, such as dance classes for children and crafting activities like making tiaras and crowns. Cafarella believes in the importance of supporting the community, especially considering the economic climate, and emphasizes that children are integral to the future. Convergence Ballet has received positive testimonials for its performances and community engagement, reflecting the company's commitment to excellence in the arts and philanthropy. The company continues to be a dynamic presence in the Phoenix arts scene, offering a platform for dancers to showcase their talents and for audiences to enjoy ballet during the traditionally quiet summer season.
