Andromeda Electric Orchestra

Hollywood, CA, United States

The Andromeda Electric Orchestra (AEO) is an innovative ensemble that was founded on April 7, 2019, by Alfred Surenyan. It distinguishes itself from traditional orchestras by specializing in the performance of music using electric musical instruments. AEO was incorporated in February 2019 and recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization by the IRS in May 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, AEO adapted by offering free curbside performances from 2020 to mid-2021, bringing music directly to the community. This period allowed the orchestra to grow and evolve into its current form. AEO is not a conventional symphonic or pops orchestra; it performs familiar music but enhances it with electronic effects and sound processing, including the use of delay, chorus, and overdrive. The orchestra incorporates a variety of electric instruments, such as synthesizers and Electric Wind Instruments (EWIs), and is open to expanding its orchestration to include non-traditional instruments like the Theremin. The orchestra's approach to music involves adding effects to classical pieces, thereby creating new soundscapes and reimagining the work of composers like Mozart and Beethoven. AEO also composes original music with these effects in mind, contributing to the evolution of orchestral music which has seen continual change from the Baroque era to the present day. AEO is committed to educational outreach, with plans to implement a program starting in 2022 that will focus on teaching students in underprivileged areas of Los Angeles about orchestras, composers, classical music, and the production of electric musical instruments. The orchestra's diversity and inclusion policy ensures a varied membership and programming that features ethnic, racial, female, and LGBTQ composers. Looking to the future, AEO aims to grow its membership and continue exploring the possibilities of electric orchestral music. It plans to hold concerts that align with its innovative goals, including chamber music concerts that offer a more intimate experience. The ensemble's vision is to keep music alive and relevant for present and future generations. The Andromeda Electric Orchestra is led by Music Director Alfred Surenyan and Concertmaster Paula Kuhr. It hosts a variety of events, such as the Barnsdall Concert Series, AEO Wine Social, Nebula Chamber Concerts, and educational events. AEO also engages in fundraising through memberships, advertising, online auctions, and other campaigns. The organization's website is managed by MacHighway and features opportunities for engagement, including photos, videos, music on Bandcamp, and merchandise through the Andromeda Intergalactic Store.
