Kensington Symphony

Kensington, United States

The Kensington Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is a distinguished community orchestra located in West Contra Costa County, serving the Bay Area with a rich history of musical excellence. Founded in 1977 by Robert M. Kissel, the KSO originated as the Phoenix Symphony, symbolizing a new beginning from the remnants of the first Contra Costa Symphony. The orchestra's early days saw a growing number of musicians, prompting a move from the Arlington Community Church to the First Unitarian Church on Lawson Road in Kensington, which subsequently led to the adoption of its current name to better represent its home base. In 1979, the KSO was officially incorporated in Contra Costa County as a 501(c)(3) California non-profit corporation. The baton of leadership passed from Kissel, who served as the Music Director and Conductor from 1977 to 1990, to Lloyd Elliot, who held the position from 1990 to 2003. The orchestra's third and current Music Director and Conductor, Geoffrey Gallegos, took over in 2004. Under his guidance, the KSO has seen a significant expansion in both membership and repertoire, while also achieving remarkable improvements in artistic and musical standards. The KSO is renowned for its commitment to the local community, with a mission to enrich lives through the presentation of high-quality symphonic music at accessible prices. A key aspect of the orchestra's mission includes supporting and showcasing local artists as soloists, expanding the orchestral repertoire with new works—particularly from local composers—and fostering the development of young emerging talent in support of music education. The orchestra's membership is a diverse mix of seasoned professionals, dedicated amateur musicians, music educators, and students from across the Bay Area. The KSO presents five concert programs each season, running from September through June, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley in Kensington. The KSO also places a strong emphasis on creating a nurturing and educational environment for its members, encouraging them to achieve the highest musical and artistic standards. This approach not only benefits the musicians but also ensures that the community receives performances of exceptional quality. As the orchestra celebrates its 45th season, it continues to be a pillar of the local arts scene, reflecting the dynamic cultural landscape of the region and remaining steadfast in its mission to make symphonic music an integral and enriching part of community life.
