About the Elgin Opera House The Elgin Opera House, a historic landmark and cultural hub, was established in 1911 in the city of Elgin. This initiative was taken by city leaders to distance the city hall from a nearby house of ill repute and to create a space that would serve both as the seat of city government and a center for performing arts. The Opera House was designed by architect John L. Slater from La Grande, who envisioned the building in the Colonial Revival style. The construction was completed by contractor John Oberg of Wallowa, who crafted the two-story brick structure with a stone foundation, a decorative metal cornice, and pilasters that highlight the entrance, all at a cost of $15,000. The Elgin Opera House is notable for its dual-purpose design, a feature that was relatively unique at the time. The first performance in the Opera House was by the Elgin High School graduating class of 1912. The dedication ceremony on July 4 of that year included an oration by Walter M. Pierce of Hot Lake, who would later become the governor of Oregon, and was attended by a record crowd. At its inauguration, the Opera House was praised for its excellent acoustics and the slanted seating arrangement that enhanced viewing experiences. It boasted plush draperies, box seats, an orchestra pit, elaborate backdrops, and rococo decor. The building has since been renovated to showcase its original motif and to preserve its architectural splendor. The historic and aesthetic significance of the Elgin Opera House led to its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Buildings. It is currently the home of the performing arts group Friends of the Opera House and continues to be a vital part of the community, hosting a variety of events. The Opera House Theater not only presents movies but also features performances by noted artists throughout the year. The Elgin Opera House remains a testament to the city's commitment to arts and culture, and its rich history continues to attract visitors and entertain patrons, contributing to the cultural fabric of Elgin.
