Portland Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1924, the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is recognized as one of the leading symphony orchestras of its size in the United States. Initially named the Amateur Strand Symphony Orchestra, the group held its first rehearsal with 75 instrumentalists and performed its debut concert at the Strand Theatre. Over the years, the orchestra underwent several name changes and structural transformations, becoming the Portland Symphony Orchestra in 1932. The PSO has seen numerous distinguished conductors, including its current Music Director, Eckart Preu, who began his tenure in the 2019-20 season. The orchestra is celebrated for its commitment to delivering world-class performances and enriching the community through music. The PSO's extensive history includes significant contributions to music education and community engagement, such as the initiation of Young People’s Concerts and the establishment of the Magic of Christmas series. The organization operates from Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine, and continues to thrive through robust community support and innovative programming.
