Visionary Black composer Julia Perry (1924-1979) was a revolutionary artist whose groundbreaking operas, symphonies, and choral works innovatively combined musical idioms of the African diaspora with 20th century European techniques. On the anniversary of her 100th birthday, musician Ashleigh Gordon, co-founder of Castle of Our Skins and a powerful advocate for Black composers, will explore Perry’s fascinating life and work in a dynamic discussion with conductor and composer Dr. Julius P. Williams (Berklee College of Music). The evening will also include riveting performances of Perry’s music by Boston Lyric Opera artists, as well as an audience Q&A.

GBH Music will introduce new listeners to opera in a video series produced in collaboration with Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) and New England Conservatory (NEC). Designed for newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts, “Getting into Opera” aims to ignite a passion for the genre by showcasing how powerful performances are shaped by vocal coaching and stage direction. The innovative multi-platform video series will be filmed in front of a live audience in GBH’s acoustically acclaimed Fraser Performance Studio.

In a vivid retelling of the Orpheus myth from his bride’s perspective, composer Matthew Aucoin and librettist Sarah Ruhl’s stunning opera Eurydice follows the titular character as she travels to the underworld on her wedding day. Boston Lyric Opera, together with Opera Grand Rapids, has co-commissioned a new,  intimate orchestral arrangement from Aucoin, acclaimed composer and MacArthur Fellow, and Ruhl, Tony and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright. This compelling new production, conducted by the composer and directed by Doug Fitch, delves into the profound bonds of family and love – between parents and children, between husband and wife. Eurydice is a resonant story of love’s beauty and brutality – and the power of music to find us in the dark.

Written in 1780 by the virtuoso Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the chamber opera The Anonymous Lover tells the story of Léontine, a wealthy young widow disenchanted with the notion of love, who starts receiving letters from an anonymous admirer. In this joyful new co-production by Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Philadelphia, Bologne’s stirring music is complemented by a fresh book adaptation from the pen of Obie Award-winning Boston playwright Kirsten Greenidge, mixing English dialogue with the original French singing. Don’t miss an evening of lighthearted mishaps, heartfelt melodies, and endearing characters that will inspire you to root for true love!

When young Angelina momentarily escapes her ungrateful stepfamily to attend a royal ball in disguise, she meets Prince Ramiro, who vows to find her after she disappears into the night. In this city-centric take on the Cinderella story, two familiar Boston neighborhoods set the stage where boy and girl meet and sweep each other off their feet. With its beautiful melodies and sparkling vocals, the magic of Rossini’s energetic score illuminates the heart of the story. Don’t miss BLO’s new production of La Cenerentola, conducted by David Angus and directed by Dawn M. Simmons in her opera debut.

Amid Puccini’s lush and sweeping score, Madama Butterfly unfolds in 1940s America under the shadow of World War II. In a brand-new production from Boston Lyric Opera, wander through the nightlife of San Francisco on the eve of Pearl Harbor through the story of Butterfly, a nightclub performer contributing to the war effort, and Pinkerton, a young soldier, on the eve of his deployment. A culmination of BLO’s three-year exploration of authentic storytelling through The Butterfly Process, this production examines the experience of Japanese Americans during a critical moment in U.S. history.
