The Seattle Chamber Music Society (SCMS) is a prominent organization dedicated to the appreciation and performance of chamber music in the Seattle region. With a mission to present performances featuring world-class musicians in accessible and inviting formats, SCMS aims to cultivate a broad-based, sustainable audience for chamber music through education and community outreach initiatives. Founded in 1982 by Toby Saks, a celebrated cellist and music educator, SCMS has become a vital part of Seattle's cultural landscape. Toby Saks was born on January 8, 1942, in New York City and had an illustrious career as a musician before moving to Seattle in 1976 to join the music faculty of the University of Washington. She served as SCMS's Artistic Director for 30 years and played a pivotal role in shaping the organization's direction and success. Toby Saks passed away on August 1, 2013, but her legacy continues to thrive through the society's ongoing work. Each year, SCMS presents a Winter Festival in January and a Summer Festival in July, both held at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. These festivals have become a hallmark of the organization, showcasing a diverse range of chamber music pieces performed over its 35-year history. In addition to the festivals, SCMS offers a variety of community engagement programs designed to foster audience appreciation and understanding of chamber music. These programs include Family Concerts, Chamber Music in the Classroom, Masterclasses, and the Young Artist Awards in partnership with Classical KING FM 98.1. The society's commitment to community engagement extends to events such as Music Under the Stars, which are live remote audio-only broadcasts of Summer Festival concerts, and Chamber Music in the Park, a live concert with Festival musicians that takes place at Volunteer Park during the Summer Festival. SCMS also places a strong emphasis on education, with programs like the Academy, which provides learning opportunities for young musicians, and the Commissioning Club, which supports the creation of new chamber music works. The organization's educational outreach is complemented by a range of resources, including podcasts and master classes, aimed at deepening the public's understanding of chamber music. The society's leadership includes Artistic Director James Ehnes, a renowned violinist, and a dedicated Board and Staff. SCMS also provides opportunities for employment and volunteering, further involving the community in its mission. In its pursuit of racial equity and social justice, the Seattle Chamber Music Society stands firm in its commitment to all communities within the diverse society of Seattle. The organization's dedication to this cause is reflected in its programming and outreach efforts. The Seattle Chamber Music Society is supported by donations, grants, and corporate sponsorships, which enable it to continue its mission of fostering chamber music. The society offers various patron benefits and is involved in initiatives such as the Legacy Club, Endowment, and Commissioning Club to ensure its long-term sustainability and growth.
