Classic Stage Company (CSC) is an influential Off-Broadway theater founded in 1967 by director Christopher Martin. Initially located in a 100-seat venue at Rutgers Presbyterian Church, CSC relocated in 1973 to its current home on 13th Street, a former East Village carriage house. Over the decades, CSC has become a prominent platform for both emerging and established artists, celebrated for its innovative interpretations of classic works. Productions have received accolades from major Off-Broadway theater awards, including the Obie, Drama Desk, and Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work. CSC’s mission is to challenge traditional perceptions of classic theater by reimagining great stories to highlight shared human experiences. It has been led by notable artistic directors, including Jill Rafson since 2022, who emphasizes modern classics, and Tony Award-winner John Doyle, who served from 2016 to 2022. Under Brian Kulick's leadership from 2003 to 2016, CSC expanded its repertoire to include musical theater and new works. The company also engages in educational initiatives, introducing classic literature to young audiences across New York City.
