Gil Shaham Returns

A masterclass in musical storytelling, Stravinsky’s Petrushka mined Russian folk music to imagine the rich inner lives of dancing puppets. Soviet composer Sofia Gubaidulina crafted her own pointed fable about a piece of chalk that dwindles away in mindless busywork until it is liberated by a creative child, while leading opera and film composer Erich Korngold poured all of his dramatic gifts into his soaringly lyrical Violin Concerto. Award-winning violinist Gil Shaham uses his uniquely warm and poetic tone to kindle the Concerto’s “Old World” romantic sensibility.

Melody is one of the universal elements of music and defines the music we know and love. A great melody can express ideas and emotions, help tell a story, and bring people together through song. Composers create melodies through a combination of rhythmic patterns, sweeping contours, and expressive qualities. Your students will actually perform with the BSO in this first ever Baltimore presentation of the Carnegie Hall Link-Up Concert experience, "The Orchestra Sings."

The Orchestra Sings

An estranged married biracial (Black and White) couple confront their feelings about race and bias. Desperate to locate their son, they come to the police station and learn he was detained by local police in a traffic stop incident. Demanding answers, the couple contend with a rookie inexperienced white desk police officer and the more experienced Black career police officer. Tension builds to the end, when what occurred with their son finally comes to light.

The young Spanish conductor Roberto González-Monjas makes his BSO debut with a testament to the universal power of music, culminating in a rare reading of Mendelssohn’s deeply spiritual “Reformation” Symphony.  Bartók's Third Piano Concerto, finished in his final days, peers into the unknown with grace and humility, qualities brought to the forefront through the sensitive artistry of the Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son. The British composer Hannah Kendall harnesses ordinary sounds and everyday objects in an imaginative new work.

Heyward Conducts Beethoven’s Fifth

In a surge of passion and drama, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony traces a clear narrative of darkness to light, probing the eternal questions of fate and faith. A hallmark of the violin repertoire, Berg's concerto delves into a mysterious, autumnal sound world, played to perfection by celebrated virtuoso Augustin Hadelich. Just as Berg sought spiritual solace by quoting a chorale by J.S. Bach, Martinů draws upon Beethoven's Fifth and the St. Wenceslas Chorale in this memorial to a Nazi massacre, both a tender hymn and a fervent prayer.
