The program also introduces Avner Dorman's Piano Concerto No. 3, a recent work from 2022, described as a rollercoaster of emotions, from despair to ecstasy, featuring Mackenzie Melemed making his ESO debut on piano.

Barber’s whimsical Violin Concerto spotlights ESO Concertmaster Robert Uchida with poetic music that will sweep you off your feet. It’s a mystery why Schubert left his eighth symphony unfinished, although one historian claimed, “He could never have finished it because nothing could approach the originality, power, and skill of the first two movements.” On the other hand, Beethoven wrote four different overtures for his one opera, of which the third is the most impressive, and most popular.

Edmonton’s Celeigh Cardinal makes her ESO debut. This JUNO award-winning, Metis soul-folk singer/songwriter brings humour, passion, and endless energy to the stage. This unique performance shines a spotlight on some of today's most brilliant composers, featuring the premiere of Ian Cusson's "Le loup de Lafontaine - Suite for Orchestra in Three Scenes." This evocative piece brings the legend of The Wolf of Lafontaine to life, accompanied by the talents of Ballet Edmonton and the Chronos Vocal Ensemble.

Ian Cusson, a composer of Métis and French-Canadian descent, explores themes of Canadian Indigenous experience, mixed-racial identity, and the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures. His work, inspired by the cautionary tale set in the small Ontario community of Lafontaine in 1902, delves into the dynamics between settler and Indigenous communities during a time of mistrust, united only by the common goal of confronting a menacing wolf.

The evening's program also includes premieres by Jocelyn Morlock and Emilie Cecilia Lebel, alongside various songs for a capella choir, promising an unforgettable journey through contemporary music. A Very Merry Pops

Rejoice! Handel's treasured sacred work, which has long been a beloved holiday staple, returns to the Winspear stage. This classic Christmas tradition, composed in 1741, will put you in the holiday mood with its splendid arias, powerful recitatives, and glorious choral sections, including the famous "Hallelujah" chorus. Conducted by Nicholas McGegan, featuring the Richard Eaton Singers with your ESO.  This concert will be approximately 2.5 hours with an intermission.

Alex Prior returns to the Winspear Stage to conduct a provocative musical journey befitting his big personality. This concert will shine a spotlight on some of today’s brightest composers. Ballet Edmonton will join the orchestra for the premiere of Ian Cusson's Le loup de Lafontaine - Suite for Orchestra in Three Scenes, which brings the legend of The Wolf of Lafontaine to life on the Winspear stage.

Mendelssohn used inspiration from his travels to Britain to develop the folk-like tunes and rhythms found in his famous “Scottish” symphony. Allene Hackleman, ESO Principal Horn since 2004, will be featured as the soloist for Mozart’s triumphant concerto, which he playfully (and mysteriously) wrote in black, red, green, and blue ink. Conductor Jessica Cottis champions the music of young Australian composer Connor D’Netto, whose 2020 piece was written with “gentle hope and burning determination” as the world began its recovery from the pandemic.

Mozart & Mendelssohn

Sergei Rachmaninoff always wanted to compose a ballet but never had the opportunity. Instead, later in life, he wrote a set of three colourful symphonic dances.  Ravel originally composed La valse as a ballet, but it was considered undanceable. He published it anyway with a few descriptive phrases like “glimpses of waltzing couples,” “an immense hall,” “progressively brighter,” until finally “chandelier bursts forth.” Avner Dorman describes his concerto for piano composed in 2022 as “a work that expresses extreme emotions and sudden changes, from the depth of despair to complete ecstasy.”

The road from Hollywood to Broadway is paved with unforgettable songs and stories. Jack Everly, Ted Keegan (Broadway’s Phantom) and rising star Katie Scarlett Swaney have a line-up of music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Barry, Stephen Schwartz, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, and John Williams that will remind you of the musical magic of theatre and cinema. Your ESO will perform your favourite songs from Titanic, The Phantom of the Opera, La La Land, Wicked, and more!

Few works have more memorable melodies than Dvořák’s charming Cello Concerto, performed by young Canadian cellist Stéphane Tétreault. John McPherson has been the ESO’s Principal Trombone since 1980 and was also Composer-in-Residence in 2016-2017 when he wrote his moving exploration of grief, peace, and liberation. Robert Schumann’s romantic symphony glows with optimism, especially the stunning brass writing inspired by a visit to Cologne’s gothic cathedral on the Rhine.

Tchaikovsky’s joyful Symphony No. 2 is filled with his favourite folk tunes and bursting with youthful optimism. Clara Schumann wrote her glittering Piano Concerto when she was just 14 years old, and it is brimming with innocence and fun. Mason Bates’ pulsating Mothership was launched a decade ago by the YouTube Symphony Orchestra featuring young musicians from around the world.

The famous Davis Concert Organ will be featured front-and-center in Samy Moussa’s elegant tone poem and Guilmant’s lively symphony. Jean-Willy Kunz, Organist-in-Residence with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, joins young British conductor Kerem Hasan in a concert that’s full of musical variety. Rejoice! Handel's treasured sacred work, which has long been a beloved holiday staple, returns to the Winspear stage. This classic Christmas tradition, composed in 1741, will put you in the holiday mood with its splendid arias, powerful recitatives, and glorious choral sections, including the famous "Hallelujah" chorus. Featuring the Richard Eaton Singers.

The Vancouver Symphony’s Music Director Otto Tausk makes his Edmonton debut conducting a Mozart masterpiece - his Sinfonia concertante - music that historian Alfred Einstein wrote “dropped from heaven.” Written when Mendelssohn was just 15 years old, his First Symphony is filled with energy and youthful passion, reflecting his ideal that “the essence of beauty is unity in variety.” Manitoba-born Jocelyn Morlock called her mesmerizing Strange Loop “whimsical and fun/frenetic” music where “despite movement, one always ends up where one started.”

Tony DeSare's signature vocal and robust piano style pay tribute to the iconic songs of Billy Joel. Generations of Billy Joel fans will experience full symphonic orchestrations with Tony's unique take on some of his most beloved hits including "Just the Way You Are", "Piano Man", "New York State of Mind", "Only the Good Die Young", "Movin Out" "My Life", "You May Be Right" "Don't Ask Me Why", and many more.

The Four Seasons, four evocative violin concerti by the Venetian composer, violinist, poet, and cleric Antonio Vivaldi (affectionately known as the Red Priest because of his flaming red hair), are considered the crown jewels of the Italian baroque. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote of the 1960 quartet on which the haunting Chamber Symphony is based, “When I die, no one will write music in my memory, so I decided to write it myself.” Heinrich Biber’s imaginative Battaglia is an early baroque soundscape of battle preparations, blunted by drunken musketeer songs, and war, ending with a mournful lament.

Following their thrilling initial collaboration in 2024, ESO Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and award-winning Canadian pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko reunite to perform Johannes Brahms’ towering Second Piano Concerto alongside Bright Sheng's entrancing orchestral works Prelude and The Black Swan in honour of the Lunar New Year.

After his unforgettable debut in October 2024, pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko (of Salmon Arm, BC) returns to perform the work with which he won the 2024 Leeds Piano Competition – Brahms' epic Piano Concerto No. 2. Wagner's Prelude to his innovative opera Tristan and Isolde conveys melodramatic longing with aching harmonic progressions and unmatched emotional intensity. Tchaikovsky's tone poem of Francesca da Rimini’s tragic tale completes this romantic program steeped in passion, drama, and doomed love.

Forbidden Love: Brahms, Tchaikovsky & Wagner

Celebrated British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor returns after a 12-year absence to perform Benjamin Britten’s energetic Piano Concerto, written when the composer was 24 and known for its rhythmic drive and inventive orchestration. At its premiere, a critic wrote cryptically of Brahms’ final symphony, “It is like a dark well; the longer we look into it, the more brightly the stars shine back." Malcolm Forsyth wrote his celebratory Jubilee Overture in 1964 when he was 28, four years before he moved to Edmonton and became a member of the ESO. Don’t miss this intriguing concert juxtaposing music of youthful exuberance and wise experience.

Three leading ladies, including Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked and Mary Poppins herself, light up the stage in an evening of Broadway showstoppers. Beethoven subtitled his sixth Symphony “Pastorale - Recollections of Country Life” and filled it with innovative orchestral depictions of nature, including birdsong, a flowing stream, and a thunderstorm. Camille Saint-Saëns’ philosophy that “form is the essence of art” is wonderfully realized in his compact and eloquent Cello Concerto No. 1, featuring Montreal-born Jean-Guihen Queyras in his long overdue Edmonton debut.

The ESO brings Mo Willems’ award-winning book Because to life, with music written by Jessie Montgomery, in this symphony of serendipity, reminding us that sometimes the smallest moments have the biggest impact.

Symphony For Kids concerts are designed to be the ideal child-sized introduction to orchestral music. Family-friendly activities are available in the lobby prior to each SFK concert, so be sure to arrive early – and, of course, there will be fresh popcorn!

Audience-favourite Sara Davis Buechner returns with Edmonton-born rising star Jessica Yuma to perform Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, a work full of vigor and breathtaking moments. English composer William Walton’s Symphony No. 1 takes listeners on a journey through rich harmony, heart-wrenching climaxes, and ultimate triumph. Plus, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia pays tribute to a theme written more than three centuries earlier by composer Thomas Tallis.

Carmina Burana remains one of the most popular and dramatic masterpieces in orchestral repertoire. Conducted by Jean-Marie Zeitouni, this towering work based on a medieval collection of poems is a must-see. Ravel’s delicate orchestration in his Suite from Daphnis et Chloé, based on a Greek novel of the same name, is a lush musical adventure full of Impressionist colour. Finally, hear an exciting new ESO commission by leading Canadian composer Julien Bilodeau.

Singers Julie Reiber (star of Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill) and Bryce Ryness (star of Broadway’s revival of Hair) rock on with the orchestra as we roll out a collection of classics that have powered big-screen soundtracks for decades. From the orchestra’s thrilling sonority to timeless power ballads, expect to hear favorites from films like Rocketman, Top Gun Maverick, Grease, Tommy, Back to the Future, Rock of Ages, Elvis, Yesterday, and more.
