Calgary Youth Orchestra

Calgary, AB, Canada

The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is a distinguished youth orchestra that serves as the premier ensemble of the Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Founded in 1957 by Frank Simpson, the CYO has grown to become an internationally recognized institution, contributing to the cultural and educational landscape of the greater Calgary area. With a mission to provide unique musical, educational, and cultural experiences for young musicians, the CYO emphasizes the development of musical skill, discipline, personal commitment, teamwork, and community service. These values are reflected in the testimonials of CYO members, who describe their experiences as challenging, enriching, and influential in their decisions to pursue careers in music. Under the artistic leadership of Music Director Edmond Agopian since 2002, the CYO has achieved significant acclaim. The orchestra has toured extensively, performing in countries such as Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and New Zealand. Notable performances include playing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her 2005 visit to Calgary and for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2009. The CYO has collaborated with esteemed conductors and ensembles, including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Jeunesse Classique Ballet. It has also commissioned and premiered works by prominent composers and participated in international festivals and events, such as the Juno Awards. The CYO's history is marked by its evolution from the Calgary Junior Philharmonic School Orchestra to its current status as a flagship ensemble. The orchestra was initially funded by John Bach, a former Director of the Mount Royal University Conservatory, and became part of the Conservatory in 1965. The CYO Society, incorporated in 1973, supports the orchestra through community involvement and financial backing. The CYO's structure includes regular Saturday morning rehearsals, coaching sessions with expert clinicians, workshops, and concerts in and around Calgary. The CYO Society, governed by a Board of Directors, is responsible for the financial and operational aspects of the orchestra, including fundraising and managing the orchestra's business affairs. The Conservatory at Mount Royal University plays a vital role in the artistic and musical direction of the CYO, providing facilities, administrative services, and support for the orchestra's endeavors. The Conservatory takes pride in the CYO's accomplishments and the collaborative effort of students, parents, and community members. Music Director Edmond Agopian, a violin graduate of the Juilliard School, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to music in Alberta and his successful tenure with the CYO. His work has led to the orchestra's continued growth and success, with CYO alumni joining prestigious orchestras around the world. The Calgary Youth Orchestra's recording, "The Thrill of the Western," featuring music from Western movies, has been lauded for its imaginative interpretation and enthusiastic performance. The CYO's commitment to musical excellence and its impact on the lives of young musicians in Calgary make it a vital part of the city's cultural fabric.
