For nearly two decades, Black Violin has been merging string arrangements with modern beats and vocals and building bridges in communities along the way. Members Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste first met in orchestra class at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, becoming classically trained on the violin and viola through their high school and college careers. Post-college, they reconvened to produce beats for South Florida rappers, and began building an audience in local clubs. They later went on to win Showtime at the Apollo in 2005, and eventually sold-out headline performances at venues across the country, including a sold out two-night headline run at The Kennedy Center in 2018. NPR took note and declared “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” Black Violin’s2019album release, Take the Stairs, earned a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album”. The band also recently received their second ever Grammy Award nomination for the track “The Message” as Best Americana Performance, in collaboration with The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Opening for Black Violin is singer/songwriter, Abraham Alexander. With over 5.5 million Spotify streams for his song, “Stay,” Alexander’s music is shaped with components of soul, hip-hop, and blues. Dallas Observer described his style as “elements of John Legend, Michael Kiwanuka, and Moses Sumney.” NPR Music declares “his soulful, blues style voice brings listeners into a personal journey, evoking emotion in the deepest sense.” Alexander instills his music with a joyful passion and irrepressible spirit, ultimately giving way to songs that radiate hope.

Black Violin is led by classically trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin). Joining them onstage are DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band’s Give Thanks Tour employs playful storytelling, whimsical string melodies, and hard-hitting beats to highlight the unifying pillars of the holiday season: Giving back to others and being wholeheartedly thankful. Fans can expect to dance along to hits from the band’s Grammy-nominated Take the Stairs album as well as holiday favorites from their Give Thanks album.

Black Violin has performed its signature blend of hip hop and classical music to sold-out audiences in venues as diverse as Harlem’s Apollo Theater and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. In 2018, they blew away Central Coast audiences at the Performing Arts Center in one of the most talked-about performances in recent seasons. In addition to traditional concert touring, Black Violin has been featured on “The Tonight Show,” “Ellen,” “The Wendy Williams Show,” and more. The group has also collaborated creatively with such artists as Kanye West, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean, and Alicia Keys. Come hear what everyone is still talking about!
