The Bay Area Rainbow Symphony (BARS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in 2008 with a mission to promote and support LGBTQ musicians and composers. BARS is recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence and its role in community building within the performing arts sector. BARS is known for its dynamic and eclectic programming, which reflects the LGBTQ community's passion for music that is both entertaining and relevant. The organization's LGBTQ Composer & Performing Artist series aims to educate a broad audience and provide access to queer-themed and queer-made programming. This initiative not only strengthens the core of the LGBTQ community but also builds bridges to the mainstream, fostering inclusivity and diversity. The orchestra is committed to showcasing music by at least one LGBTQ composer or soloist in every concert, and it also ensures that at least one piece composed by a woman is performed at each event. Notable works performed by BARS include Symphony No. 1 in E minor by Florence Price and Boatswain's Mate Overture by Ethel Smyth. BARS is led by a team of dedicated directors and board members. Dawn Harms serves as the Music Director and has a diverse career as a chamber musician, violin soloist, concertmaster, and conductor. The Board of Directors includes individuals from various professional backgrounds who share a passion for music and the organization's mission. The history of BARS is marked by significant milestones and achievements. The organization's inaugural meeting took place on October 21, 2007, and its first rehearsal was held on March 5, 2008, at the Old First Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. The premiere concert followed on June 8, 2008, as part of the Old First Concerts series, drawing over 200 audience members. BARS received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in January 2009 and has since been involved in numerous collaborations and performances, including at prestigious venues like Davies Symphony Hall and the Herbst Theatre. BARS has also been involved in various community and social initiatives, such as performing a free benefit concert in memory of the Orlando victims and participating in the Violins of Hope project. The organization celebrated its 10th Anniversary in March 2018 with a special concert featuring renowned soprano Patricia Racette. Throughout its history, BARS has continued to redefine the orchestra experience for both audiences and members, leveraging the power of music for education and personal enrichment. The organization remains a beacon of confidence, visibility, and artistic excellence within the LGBTQ community and the performing arts world at large.
