With its five-movement structure and the numerous programmatic indications Mahler incorporated into his music, this Second Symphony is an opus of exceptional sophistication, supported by an exceptionally large performing apparatus. The world and atmosphere of the "Wunderhorn" songs are just as present as the sonic surges characteristic of his symphonic style, culminating in a vision of the "Resurrection," initially mysterious and then brilliant, conveyed through both the words and the music.

Prussia's Court Music, the chamber orchestra series of the Staatskapelle Berlin, has been in existence for over two decades. It focuses on music from the 17th and 18th centuries, not least composers and works that are particularly connected to the history of the Staatsoper and the Staatskapelle. This season's concerts will focus – in addition to the new production of The Abduction from the Seraglio – on the music of early and middle Mozart, who, both in his hometown of Salzburg and on his travels through Europe, keenly embraced the musical traditions of his time and used them productively in his own work. In addition, the renowned Italian gambist and ensemble leader Vittorio Ghielmi will be a guest at Prussia's Court Music for a weekend, with a program featuring music by the Italian Baroque composer Agostino Steffani.

Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

With Franz Lehár, Viennese operetta experienced a noticeable upswing in the first decades of the 20th century. The new flowering of the genre, known as the “Silver Age,” is due not only to the extremely popular The Merry Widow , but also to Lehár’s late operettas from the 1920s and early 1930s, in which he consciously approached grand opera. These works are ambitious and sophisticated, and often feature prominent figures from cultural history, such as the “Devil’s Violinist” Niccolò Paganini or the “Poet Prince” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (in the operetta Friederike ). And with Giuditta , described as a “musical comedy,” he even celebrated a premiere at the Vienna State Opera. Melodic bliss and melancholy are combined in Lehár’s music in a fascinating way.

Engelbert Humperdinck's opera "Hansel and Gretel" is popular with young and old , especially during Advent and Christmas. This year, a special version for families will be presented, featuring Lindenbrass, the brass ensemble of the Staatskapelle Berlin. Ten musicians accompany and enrich the fairytale narrative with the sounds of Humperdinck's work, including all the familiar melodies and their inherent poetic magic.

As one of the most original and prolific composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten left behind a particularly extensive and rich oeuvre. In 1962/63, he composed a "Symphony for Cello and Orchestra" for Mstislav Rostropovich, distinguished by the equal treatment of solo and tutti, which unfold in virtuoso interplay. Britain, in this case Scotland, became a source of inspiration for the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whose Scottish Symphony  grew out of a lasting travel experience in the Nordic landscape and culture and remains one of his major works. Highly Romantic scenery is brought to life, carried by orchestral sounds rich in form and color.

In the mid-19th century, Russia emerged as an independent culture on the musical map of Europe. Mikhail Glinka, the "Father of Russian Music," made a decisive contribution to this through his operas and instrumental works – his overture to Ruslan and Ludmila is one of the outstanding examples of brilliant orchestral music. Decades later, the country's leading symphonist was Pyotr Tchaikovsky, whose emotionally profound Symphony No. 5 of 1888 is arguably one of the most significant achievements in the field of orchestral music. A certain symphonic character is also inherent in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, a work of both concentrated and effective composition from his virtuoso period around 1800.

Fabian Müller has already performed all of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas in the Pierre Boulez Hall; now he will play Mozart's A major concerto, composed in 1786 while he was working on Le nozze di Figaro . Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund will be heard conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin for the first time, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the meditative sound world of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who celebrates his 90th birthday a few days before the concert. The music of Dobrinka Tabakova, which references a melody by Franz Schubert, leads into a "kind of weightlessness through the cosmos, past stars and planets." Schubert's enigmatic Symphony in B minor will be heard next – music that oscillates between lyrical intensity and gloom, between light and shadow.

Béla Bartók and Antonín Dvořák each gave the music of their homeland a face, a voice, and a sound, each in his own unique way. Melodic and rhythmic elements that can be considered characteristic of Hungary and Bohemia have found their way into many of their works. Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 1, an early work from 1907/08, born of deep emotional connection, embodies his style with its elegy and vitality. Similarly, with his Symphony No. 8, composed in 1889, Dvořák succeeded in creating music that captivates with its inventiveness and experimental spirit, as well as its melodic and rhythmic qualities, while simultaneously proving immensely diverse and colorful.

This season, ensembles have come together to select music from different periods, styles and cultures under the theme of ‘playing together’. Johann Sebastian Bach was not only a scholarly composer, but also a popular one. In 1742, he wrote a "Cantate burlesque" in Leipzig, a roughly half-hour-long work later referred to as a peasant cantata . Its distinctive character is not only due to the Saxon dialect in which some sections are written, but also due to the inclusion of dance forms and folk song melodies.

With his symphonic poems, Franz Liszt founded a new, pioneering genre of orchestral music around the middle of the 19th century. Over the next few years, Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Berlin will be exploring this musical cosmos, which is itself highly innovative and still seems extremely bold today. They will begin with performances of the famous Bergsinfonie, for which the literary-minded Liszt was inspired by a poem by Victor Hugo, and of Tasso, lamento e trionfo, a musical reflection on the legendary Renaissance poet who took shape through Goethe and Byron. In addition, a second cycle begins - the performance of the complete orchestral songs by Richard Strauss, which illuminates a special facet of this composer of the century, also a cross-seasonal project.

In der Jubiläumssaison von Preußens Hofmusik rückt das Ensemble Johann Sebastian Bach ins Zentrum, der von König Friedrich II. von Preußen sehr verehrt wurde, dessen Söhne zeitweilig in Berlin aktiv waren und dessen so folgenreiche Renaissance wesentlich von Berlin ausging. Inspirierte weltliche wie geistliche Kantatenwerke Bachs erklingen, dazu bekannte Instrumentalmusik wie die staunenswerte Kunst der Fuge.

Violists of the Staatskapelle Berlin one and all, the »Staatsstreicher« – we leave it up to you whether you prefer to translate this pun as »State String Players« or »putschists« – enjoy their occasional forays into other genres. On these excursions, they regularly work with prominent reciters, most of them also moonlighting far from their main professions. Today’s concert focuses on the main work of the (fictitious) author Ernst von Pidde (1877-1966), judge at a district court in his day job. His posthumous book »Richard Wagners ›Ring des Nibelungen‹ im Lichte des deutschen Strafrechts« (Richard Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung considered under the aspect of German Criminal Law) offers a relentless assessment of Wagner’s tetralogy, which is revealed as a conglomerate of serious crimes.

In music, light and shadow can be distributed in a special way. The two outer works are characterized by brightness and luminosity, both Anton Webern's tone poem Im Sommerwind from 1904, which has outgrown the late Romantic tradition to which the later twelve-tone composer was committed at the beginning of his career, and Antonín Dvořák's 6th Symphony from 1880, which reveals Brahms as a role model, but gains its own character with its sounds borrowed from Bohemian folklore. Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor, a work with a strikingly darker timbre, is placed in between and shows the “serious Mozart” who, for all his cosmopolitanism and joy of playing, also reveals many an abyss.

It is exactly 100 years since the birth of Pierre Boulez, the influential, groundbreaking composer and conductor who was closely associated with the Staatskapelle Berlin. He often conducted concerts by the orchestra, which appointed him honorary conductor in 2005 on the occasion of his 80th birthday. This year's FESTTAGE concert will feature music that is directly associated with Boulez, music by two composers with whom he had a special relationship, Alban Berg and Gustav Mahler. There will also be a composition by Boulez himself, the Notations for large orchestra, with which the Staatskapelle is very familiar thanks to repeated performances in the past.

Dazu dann eine Komposition von Boulez selbst, die Notations für großes Orchester, mit denen die Staatskapelle durch wiederholte Aufführungen in der Vergangenheit eng vertraut ist.

The collaboration between Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Berlin began in June 2022 with the performance of a Bruckner symphony (No. 7) and continued with another (No. 5) in November 2023. Now the next Bruckner symphony follows with the Sixth, a work that often stands somewhat in the shadow of its neighbors, but has its own individual qualities and a certain “individuality”. The symphony is preceded by Sebastian im Traum by Hans Werner Henze, a composition written in 2004 for large orchestra based on the poem of the same name by Georg Trakl. The music follows the text closely and attempts to visualize its meaning and mood in sound.

Wagners »Ring«-Tetralogie ist ein Kosmos für sich, der vielfach schon musikalisch wie szenisch erkundet worden ist. Das Opernhaus Unter den Linden ist seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert schon ein zentraler Ort der Auseinandersetzung mit diesem »Non plus ultra« des Musiktheaters gewesen, durch rund ein Dutzend verschiedener Inszenierungen und eine kaum überschaubare Zahl von Aufführungen. Diese besondere Geschichte soll an einem Vormittag im Apollosaal beleuchtet werden, im Vorfeld der diesjährigen FESTTAGE, die zwei Zyklen von Wagners »Ring« in der Neuproduktion von Dmitri Tcherniakov vom Herbst 2022 bringen. Tief wird dabei in die Historie der Berliner Hof- und Staatsoper eingetaucht, mit Bildern und Klängen aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, mit Erinnerungen an legendäre Dirigenten und Sänger:innen sowie Blicken auf wesentliche zeit- und kulturgeschichtliche Entwicklungen.

Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen take a particularly prominent position among Scandinavian composers of distinction. Two of their most important works were composed in the mid-1920s, Sibelius' tone poem Tapiola, a piece about the infinity and sublimity of nature, and Nielsen's sixth and final symphony, which, although labeled “semplice” (simple), is multi-layered and thoroughly complex. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto is a work from his American years, premiered in 1947 but already conceived at the end of the 1930s and dedicated to Gustav Mahler's widow Alma. His experiences with film music, which he had gained in Hollywood, are also - and especially - reflected in this tangibly inspired concerto.

In What is the word wird der gesamte Pierre Boulez Saal zur Spielfläche für diese faszinierende Komposition mit Worten Samuel Becketts von 1990/91. Eingerahmt wird das Werk mit Musik von Béla Bartók und Franz Schubert, die in besonderer Weise klassische Formen reflektieren. Schuberts 5. Sinfonie knüpft an die große Tradition der Wiener Klassik an.

After the First World War, Igor Stravinsky created a composition which he called Symphonies for Wind Instruments and which contains characteristic intonations such as bell sounds, chorale and folk song melodies as well as dance rhythms in a small space. Richard Strauss described his Metamorphosen as a “study for 23 solo strings”, his last orchestral work, which took shape in 1944/45 under the impact of the destruction of the Second World War, as a harrowing document of the times. At the beginning of the 1920s, Alexander Zemlinsky, biographically positioned between Strauss and Stravinsky, composed the Lyric Symphony, a series of orchestral songs based on texts by the Indian poet (and Nobel Prize winner for literature) Rabindranath Tagore, as a deliberate counterpart to Mahler's Song of the Earth, a work of great expressiveness and urgency.

Staatskapelle Berlin

Since 2010, ensembles from the Staatskapelle have been playing at the Bode Museum, a jewel in Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall with music from past centuries can easily lead into further hours in the museum - for example, during an exhibition visit or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Musik der Hoch- und Spätromantik, dazu ein Werk der Gegenwart. Christian Thielemann spannt in seinem ersten Konzert als neuer Generalmusikdirektor den Bogen von Mendelssohn über Schönberg bis zu dem jungen kanadischen Komponisten Samy Moussa, dessen farbenreiches Orchesterstück Elysium unter seiner Leitung 2021 in der Sagrada Familia in Barcelona zur Uraufführung gebracht worden ist. Igor Levit ist der Solist von Mendelssohns 1837 komponiertem 2. Klavierkonzert mit seinen ernsten wie lyrischen Tönen, während Schönbergs zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts nach dem Drama von Maurice Maeterlinck entstandene, opulent besetzte Tondichtung Pelleas und Melisande seine Verwurzelung in der spätromantischen Klang- und Ausdruckswelt demonstriert.

Gustav Mahlers Lied von der Erde zählt zu den eindrucksvollsten Werken an der Schwelle von der musikalischen Romantik zur Moderne. In der Verschränkung von Liedzyklus und Sinfonie, basierend auf altchinesischer Lyrik in sensibler Nachdichtung, gelang Mahler am Ende seines kurzen Lebens ein kompositorisch spürbar individuelles Werk von großer expressiver Kraft und Spannweite. Das Trompetenkonzert Hush (Stille) der 2023 im Alter von 70 Jahren verstorbenen finnischen Komponistin Kaija Saariaho, ihre letzte, posthum uraufgeführte Komposition, ist in in ähnlicher Weise ein Werk des Abschieds. Geschrieben für den Trompeter Verneri Pohjola begegnet den Hörer:innen eine Musik von faszinierendem Gestalt- und Klangfarbenreichtum.

"Since Bach's Mass in B minor and Beethoven's Missa solemnis , nothing has been written that can compare with Brahms' German Requiem in this field ," according to the influential music writer Eduard Hanslick. Transcending all denominational boundaries, Brahms created a work that most impressively expresses feelings of suffering and grief, consolation and hope, through a carefully considered selection of texts and with particular sensitivity in the way they are set. Music for Good Friday that reflects this day and simultaneously points beyond it.

Richard Strauss composed more than 40 orchestral songs over a period of decades – all of them are to be performed over several seasons, with a whole range of outstanding singers. No two songs are alike, each one possesses its own tonal characteristics; the range of Strauss’s song art is truly enormous. With his 6th Symphony, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote himself into history as one of the founders of a special kind of “programmatic music”. The Sinfonia pastorale , as he called it, became a powerful work and yet is full of accessibility, grace and charm – in the form of five musical scenes of sharp profile and concise expression that tell of nature and rural life.

In the 18th century, Central European composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart invented sounds intended to evoke associations with "Turkish music"—for example, in his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio , which premieres at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in June 2026. In addition to Mozart's Prague Symphony , Tim Fluch will also conduct the orchestral work "Effaced Figures" by Istanbul-born Ege Gür, who was awarded the European Composition Prize in Berlin in 2024 and whose works combine influences of 20th-century music with the traditions of classical Turkish music. Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 2 is also on the program.

The Honorary Conductor of the Staatskapelle Berlin turns 90. Since the 1990s, he has regularly rehearsed and conducted opera performances and concerts at the Staatskapelle Berlin and with the orchestra, often offering truly magnificent moments of fulfilling, harmonious music-making. For his milestone birthday, which Zubin Mehta is celebrating together with the Staatskapelle, he has selected music by two composers who have accompanied him throughout his career and continue to inspire him. Mozart's Symphony in G minor, the middle piece of the triad of his famous last symphonies from 1788, can be experienced in combination with Mahler's symphonic debut, composed exactly a century later. Both works capture the composers' characteristic tone, and Zubin Mehta will bring both to life in his own unique way.

Hans Pfitzner composed large-scale, sophisticated operas, as well as opulent orchestral works. In addition to concertos for violin and cello, he also wrote a four-movement piano concerto in 1922, continuing the late Romantic tradition of Brahms and Max Reger. A noticeably innovative spirit, even a musical visionary, was Franz Liszt, who opened a new chapter in European music history with his symphonic poems around the middle of the 19th century. Three of these compositions for a large, richly timbred orchestra, very different in their content and their manifestations, demonstrate the diversity of creative approaches that Liszt applied to this newly developed, soon to be very prominent, musical genre.

Beethoven on Bebelplatz – this is what the Staatskapelle Berlin and its General Music Director Christian Thielemann offer the audience at "State Opera for All," open-air and free of charge for all interested parties. The diverse, vividly sculpted natural images of Symphony No. 6, the Pastorale , can be experienced, as can the drama and powerful surges of the Egmont Overture, inspired by Goethe's heroic tragedy. These are two of Beethoven's most distinguished orchestral works, performed by the Staatskapelle Berlin, which can look back on a long-standing Beethoven tradition.

The first premiere of the season on the State Opera stage will be Jacques Offenbach's opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann – and the Opera Children's Orchestra will also be performing this imaginative music. Excerpts from Offenbach's last work will be heard. The program will be complemented by music by other great French musical theater composers of the 19th century.

Among Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's instrumental concertos, his Violin Concerto has held a particularly high status since its composition and premiere in the mid-1840s. As a work of great melodic qualities, harmonic finesse, and rhythmic intensity, it has not been without reason that it has garnered much admiration. Maurice Ravel's ballet music for Daphnis et Chloé , composed and premiered for the Ballets Russes in 1912 , is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of French Impressionism, featuring floating sounds and rich color nuances, as well as a wordless chorus. A story from Greek mythology is impressively relived with and through music.
