Visalia Ice House Theater

Visalia, CA, United States

== Visalia Community Players == The Visalia Community Players is a non-profit corporation based in California that is committed to fostering community theatre in the Visalia area. Founded in June of 1957, the organization has been a staple of the local arts scene for over six decades, driven by the dedication and volunteer efforts of its members. The Players are supported by ticket sales and tax-deductible donations, with membership open to all who have an interest in community theatre. === Mission === The mission of the Visalia Community Players is to bring community theatre to Visalia, offering a space where local community members can come together and perform for the entertainment of others. The organization strives to keep ticket prices affordable while ensuring the sustainability of the theatre, even offering discounts to students. === History === The history of the Visalia Players began with a backyard performance of "Suds in Your Eyes" at Bridget Berryman’s home. The early years saw various productions hosted in different venues, including the Visalia Civic Auditorium and local clubhouses. By 1962, the organization found a permanent home in the Legion Room of the Civic Auditorium, which they transformed into a black box theatre. ==== The Loft ==== In 1965, the Visalia Players moved to The Loft, a rented space above what is now Times Place. It was here that they reorganized into a nonprofit and underwent extensive renovations. The Loft served as their home until 1973, hosting 49 plays. ==== Wandering Years ==== After leaving The Loft, the Players spent three years without a permanent venue, performing in various locations across the city. This period was marked by a continuous search for a new home while maintaining an active production schedule. ==== Ice House Theatre ==== In 1976, the City of Visalia offered the old Ice House building to the Players. With grants and community support, the Players converted the former ice manufacturing plant into the Ice House Theatre. The theatre opened on November 10, 1976, with a production of "Gypsy," and has since undergone numerous improvements, including technological updates to lighting, sound, and ticketing systems. === Present and Future === Today, the Visalia Community Players continue to present a mix of plays and musicals each season, with over 350 productions to their credit since inception. The organization has grown in both membership and financial support, reflecting an ongoing commitment to enhancing the cultural landscape of Visalia. The Players' website, visaliaplayers.org, serves as a hub for information on current and upcoming activities, including their innovative cabaret series introduced in 2014.
