San Jose Stage Company

San Jose, CA, United States

San Jose Stage Company, commonly known as The Stage, is a prominent professional theatre company based in the South Bay area, renowned for its artistic excellence and commitment to presenting imaginative and edgy theatrical experiences. Founded with the mission to expand the community through powerful, provocative, and profound theatre, The Stage has become a beacon for cultural engagement, sparking ideas and dialogue among its audiences. The Stage is celebrated for its dedication to new, cutting-edge work as well as its innovative reinterpretations of American literature and world classics. By employing innovative stagecraft and multimedia to propel narratives, and by utilizing the talents of accomplished local actors in a true repertory style, The Stage offers a unique and intimate theatrical experience. The intimacy of the venue is underscored by the fact that the farthest seat is no more than 15 feet from the three-quarter thrust stage, fostering a profoundly visceral connection between the actor and the audience. As a vital force in the region’s economic and creative landscape, San Jose Stage Company attracts over 30,000 patrons to downtown San Jose annually and employs more than 150 local artists each year. The Stage has established itself as a strong community partner, serving as the creative home for more than 500 performance groups, including San Jose Jazz and Notre Dame High School. These partnerships are a testament to The Stage's commitment to engaging, provoking, and inspiring both current and future theatre participants and arts advocates. Over the years, The Stage has produced 165 productions, which include 18 world premieres and 49 new works, earning it the distinction of being the second-largest professional theatre and the eighth-largest performing arts organization in Silicon Valley, according to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. The Stage's production history boasts a diverse range of plays and musicals, including politically charged pieces like "The Great Leap," classic tales such as "Great Expectations," and ferocious dramas like "August: Osage County." Other notable productions include "The Tooth of Crime," "Race," "Reckless," "Red," "Persuasion," "Reefer Madness: The Musical," "Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity," "It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," and "The Threepenny Opera." The Stage also presented a virtual revival of "Persuasion" and hosted unique events like the "Spring Cabaret" and "Strange Courtesies." San Jose Stage Company continues to uphold its mission and history, guided by a dedicated staff and board. It maintains a strong BIPOC commitment, acknowledges the land on which it operates, and is actively involved in the community through various partnerships and sponsorships. The Stage's commitment to excellence and community engagement has solidified its reputation as a leading institution in the theatrical arts.
