From Symphonic Journeys to Broadway Love: Exploring the Tehama Concert Series

Empire Trio is an exhilarating and uniquely talented classical crossover ensemble, that has been taking concert halls by storm all over the world. Empire Trio features the lush and mesmerizing voice of soprano Erin Shields, the versatile and virtuosic David Shenton on piano and violin. The third member of the trio is the illustriously talented baritone Adam Cannedy.

Jaca (pronounced, ZHA-ka) is an award-winning clarinet/guitar duo that combines world music, virtuosity, and humor to bring an adventurous, passionate, and completely original musical style to the stage. Jaca combines the intimacy of an instrumental duo with a larger-than-life energy to create an experience that consistently leaves audiences buzzing. From Flamenco to Fado, Appalachia to Argentina, and guitar slides to clarinet smears, the duo explores the highest limits of what their instruments can do.

The season begins with a symphonic souvenir: “I think I have found there the beginning of my ‘Scottish’ Symphony,” Mendelssohn wrote in 1829 after visiting the ruins of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Chapel. At once dramatic and lighthearted, the resulting musical postcard is a vibrant journey from the mist to a sunny, lively finale.  North State Symphony principal musicians Michelle Keem and James Pytko will be featured in the Duet Concertino by Richard Strauss, his last purely instrumental work with a lean, retrospective voice.  The concert opens with Rossini’s Overture to Italian in Algiers, the comedic opera filled with an effervescent energy that thrust the 21-year-old into operatic stardom.

With his music videos having Internet views exceeding 200 million and bookings in every corner of the globe, Luca Stricagnoli is considered to be one of the most unique guitarists in the world. Luca’s creative style, which led him to invent instruments like the Reversed Triple Neck Guitar and the Reversed Slide Neck, vastly contributed to the modern evolution of acoustic guitar. He has been hailed as a phenomenon and a prodigy by influential magazines and newspapers all over the world, including NME, Guitar World, Der Spiegel, La Repubblica, Daily Sabah, Frankfurter Allgemeine and more. His music gave him the chance to play in over 20 countries, in front of up to 12.000 people, and even grabbed the attention of famous bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Walk Off The Earth.

JUNO-nominated artist Barbra Lica is fast rising Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter and has been receiving accolades for a unique approach that stresses subtlety, grace and storytelling. Based in Toronto, Barbra’s live show captivates audiences all over North America with her genuine warmth and confident stage presence. A seasoned act on the Canadian and American club and festival circuits, Barbra Lica has performed everywhere from New York City’s legendary Birdland to Toronto’s prestigious Koerner Hall. She has also headlined at festivals across the continent including Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Vancouver International Jazz Festival and Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and opened for the likes of Christian McBride, Pat Metheny, Bob Dorough, and Terence Blanchard.

The Rocky Mountain-based band returns to Red Bluff with stories and songs that rise from the very land they’ve protected as Canadian national park wardens. With haunting three-part harmonies and chilling tales, the band’s mountain music – blending folk, roots and western styles – reflects Canada’s protected wilderness areas. Celebrating the return of wild buffalo, wrangling grizzly bears, lonely nights on the pack trail and reflecting on an environment in crisis, a performance by The Wardens has been dubbed “the quintessential mountain-culture concert experience.”

Steve Leslie Sings James Taylor is an authentic and spellbinding concert event! Steve’s warm baritone and exceptional guitar technique (not to mention his uncanny resemblance to James Taylor) will have audiences singing along to such classics as “Carolina In My Mind,” “Shower the People,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Fire and Rain,” “Up On the Roof,” and many more. Steve Leslie has had a professional songwriting career spanning more than thirty years with songs recorded by Kenny Rogers, Mark Chesnutt, George Strait, Darryl Worley, Rhonda Vincent, Neal McCoy, Ricky Skaggs, Darius Rucker, and more.

One-of-a-kind pianist and composer Mike Strickland loves to experiment with motion and texture, using the piano as his own orchestra. He is known for his exceptional musicianship and arrangements, his virtuosic technique, and his unmatched ability to connect with audiences on a personal level. Mike’s daughter, Elizabeth, a professional classical pianist and teacher often joins him as a special guest in his concerts. Mike and Elizabeth perform together as a father/daughter piano show called Classical Meets ‘Pop’!
