Toronzo Cannon was born in Chicago on February 14, 1968, and grew up in the shadows of the notoriously tough Robert Taylor Homes. Theresa’s Lounge, one of the city’s most famous South Side blues clubs, was close by. As a child, Cannon would stand on the sidewalk outside the club’s door, soaking up the live blues pouring out while trying to sneak a glance inside at larger-than-life bluesmen like Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. He also heard plenty of blues records growing up in his grandfather’s home and listened to soul, R&B and contemporary rock on the radio.

Acoustic Alchemy does not release albums very often. The release of 33 1/3 in 2018 was an event, and the new work made it to the Top Ten of Billboard’s Jazz Album charts. The delay was the result of some personal issues and also the belief that you only write an album when you have something to say. “We’re quite lucky in that respect,” says the band’s Miles Gilderdale. “We don’t have a record label breathing down our necks, telling us we need to put out something every year.” Adds Greg Carmichael, “For us, the only time we even consider going into the studio is when we have some material that we really believe in.”

The musical roots of Firefall run deep into the fertile soil of American rock and folk rock. In more than 40 years of making music, Firefall has distinguished itself as one of the top bands in the genre known as Americana. The band helped spearhead the birth and growth of the country rock and folk-rock sound of the 1970s and still remains one of the few remaining torchbearers for harmony-laden rock. It transcends and embraces many labels: rock, soft rock, country rock, contemporary country, easy listening and Americana.

Curtis Salgado grew up in Eugene, Oregon, surrounded by music. His parents loved everything from Fats Waller to Ray Charles and his siblings introduced him to the soul and blues of Wilson Pickett and Muddy Waters. When he was 13, he attended a Count Basie concert and decided at that moment that music was his calling. After getting his hands on a harmonica, he began devouring the blues of Little Walter and Paul Butterfield and taught himself to play.

Music has always been a part of Ruthie Foster’s life. The singer/songwriter from Gause, Texas comes from a family of gospel singers and by the time she was 14, she was a soloist in her hometown choir. She attended community college in Waco, Texas, studying music and audio engineering and began fronting a blues band. Foster joined the Navy and sang in the naval band; after her service, she moved to New York, where she performed at folk venues around the city. Blues legend Buddy Guy doesn’t remember where he was playing when Vanessa Collier came on stage with him, but he remembers her very well. “There’s a young lady (Collier)came on stage with me,” he said. “I forget where I was, but she’s playing an alto saxophone, and man, she was amazing.”

There’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled brothers Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman two decades ago and offered to produce their debut album. It’s the same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy-winning producer and Black Keys frontman, Dan Auerbach, to co-write and produce their fourteenth album. The Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. They can write a damn good country song. In their 25-year career, they’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name, released albums on just about every premier Americana label, and had their songs recorded by legends like Del McCoury. It’s a resume anyone in country music would be proud to have. They may not yet be household names but their latest album, Darkest Hour produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas and released in 2023, may change all that.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band, founded by brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, began in 1958, but it wasn’t until the early 1970s when hits like “Lonely Days” and “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” charted that they hit it big, with appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Nakoa didn’t start playing the piano until he was a teen and he toured the Adirondacks and Catskills with his music. Then he set his sights on the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he started an art rock band, The Fens. His piano skills and incredible vocals led to performances with Grammy-winning singer Kathy Mattea and Grammy-winning jazz composer and Rolling Stones tour saxophone player Tim Ries.

Hendrik Hertzberg of The New York Times called Dar Williams “One of America’s best singer-songwriters,” and she has spent several decades proving him right. Her career was launched when she re-recorded a track from her first album, You’re Aging Well, with Joan Baez. The legendary folk singer invited Williams to join her on a tour of Europe and the United States and with Baez’ anointing of her as a folk singer worthy of attention, Williams’ career was on its way. “I’m the same age now that she was when she took me on the road,” Williams said. The irony is not lost on her.

What do you do for an encore when Billy Joel handpicks you to star in his musical Movin’ Out? For pianist and singer Michael Cavanaugh, the answer was to tour the world as what Billboard called “The new voice of the American Rock and Roll Songbook.” The Grammy and Tony award-nominated artist has toured with productions bringing to life the music of not only Joel but Elton John, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, and James Taylor. His album, The Way I Hear It, released in 2017, debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart.

Blues singer/songwriter Paul Thorn is the son of a preacher man. His musical career started very early in his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi. “As a child, I sang in churches,” he said. “My first paying gig was at a revival with my father when everybody came around and put money in my tambourine. After the service, there was a little girl, also about three years old, who I had a crush on. I stuffed the money I got all down in my pockets. After the service, we sat around the back of the church and I bought her a Coke with the money I’d earned. That was my first paying gig, and I guess my first date.

The Lyric Theatre presents a variety of talented tenors, but you’ve got to have a special place for a group called the Sicilian Tenors that has a singer named Caruso in it. Aaron is not related to the great Enrico Caruso, but the three singers are all classically-trained musicians who bring their lively take on everything from Italian classics like “O Sole Mio” and “That’s Amore” to arias from Tosca to the best of Broadway (think Phantom.) The late Joan Rivers said they were “The Three Tenors meet the Rat Pack” and the three friends are known for their light-hearted fun as well as for their music.

You may remember The Texas Tenors from America’s Got Talent. Since the trio’s appearance in 2009, their live ticket sales have made them the most successful touring group in the show’s history. They have released five studio albums, two PBS specials, four DVDs, singles and an award-winning children’s book and in 2019, they were Billboard Magazine’s Number 10 Classical Artists. The Tenors recently were included among the Top 50 acts in the world and the only vocal group from the United States to appear on NBC’s America’s Got Talent: The Champions. Their most recent album, Outside the Lines, is an eclectic mix of music ranging from country to rock opera as they stretch traditional genre boundaries.

Arthur Migliazza didn’t begin studying the piano until he was 13, learning the usual chords and pieces that beginners study, and he was fortunate that his teacher exposed him to many different kinds of music. “One of the things my first teachers exposed me to was the blues,” he said in an interview. “I had a kid’s book of blues and jazz and it was kind of Boogie Woogie, with the left hand repeating the bass and the right hand the chords. I really liked that. I had old recordings and the emotion and style was easy for me to understand. With the left hand playing the bass, you get on autopilot so the right hand can operate independently for chords and licks.”

Stuart is going to have a White Christmas, or at least A Peter White Christmas as the guitarist, singer and songwriter comes to town with several of his closest friends. This year, Peter White will bring along Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala to put their own special take on the music of the season. It’s a rockin’ good time and the very best way to get the holiday season underway. For White, who has been coming to The Lyric for years, the Christmas show is personal. “When I was a kid, Christmas was a big part of my life,” he said, “My father taught me the recorder and we played Christmas music he arranged going door-to-door.”
