Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York City’s Lower East Side in the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates.

In Spring 2024, Zalman Raffael will revisit his Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2. “Rachmaninoff’s music is more than just evocative, it invokes a sense of spirituality, triumph and courage, but also alludes to elegance.”

For the first time, composer Paul Moravec will orchestrate his classical music for this production of Robert Weiss’ Time Gallery. These ballets will illustrate classical ballet’s vocabulary as seen through the work of two contemporary choreographers.

“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” In Concert - NC Symphony

The Red Clay Ramblers formed roughly 50 years ago and remain one of the longest running string bands from the Piedmont of North Carolina. The Tony Award winning band have a wide-ranging repertoire that reflects their roots in old time Appalachian music, bluegrass, country, rock, New Orleans jazz, gospel and the American musical. This special anniversary show is expected to be a magical evening.

Prokofiev Romeo & Juliet

Carolina Ballet will close the season with the most enchanting version of Cinderella. In 2006, Robert Weiss first choreographed Carolina Ballet’s version for Triangle audiences. For this production, Karl Moraski’s original piano score has been orchestrated, and it will be performed live for the first time by a full orchestra. With new sets and costumes, Carolina Ballet's Cinderella will continue to enchant and excite patrons and their families throughout North Carolina.

This theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book, and Score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death. This musical features a joyous and uplifting score and is a testament that a beautiful story has the power to inspire and heal all. 

Once on This Island - North Carolina Theatre

Based on The Once and Future King by T.H. White, Lerner and Loewe’s, Camelot, this Tony-award winning musical is a story about the quest for democracy, striving for justice, and the tragic struggle between passion and aspiration, between lovers and kingdoms. This epic and timely tale features the iconic characters King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot as well as the beloved original score with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe which includes “If Ever I Would Leave You,” “What Do the Simple Folk Do?” and the title song “Camelot.”  This intimate production promises to bring the beloved classic Camelot to a new and thrilling life!
